2002 Defender 110 Td5 DCPU Chawton White

Never really understood why one would want to delete the dipstick, surely this can not be a massive cost saving..

My Discovery 4 SDV6 has no dipstick, so to get a reading you need to run the engine till its warm, switch off, wait ~15 minutes and then read on the display. All of this is not very handy and when you change the oil you better make sure you fill it with the correct amount because it not quick to check so you are basically doing that blind.

My IID tool provides instant readings, so why can that not be on the screen? Or better still have a dipstick, this solves all the problems and always works.

My point was that the OP said that when he collected the vehicle he checked the oil level on the dipstick and the oil looked black and thin.

Does the D300 have a dipstick as I thought that all modern JLR vehicles had done away with them?

The internet is a great resource for learning. May I suggest a Google search for 'Oil analysis for determining engine wear'.

Oil analysis is used by Formula 1 teams, truck fleet operators and the entire aviation and aerospace industry (where I work)...I could go on. It is a proven and accurate way to detect and monitor premature wear in different engine parts to allow appropriate intervention to mitigate catastrophic engine failures.

In my vehicle, the sample was most certainly not 'nothing'! It indicated the presence of high levels of iron clearly indicating significant crankshaft wear, most certainly way in excess of that expected with a vehicle only one year old with 21,000 miles. The report was highlighted with 'Yellow Warning' annotations to this effect. In a £60k plus vehicle, I was not prepared to accept this, nor roll the dice hoping the engine would not grenade during my intended long term ownership into the 100k plus region.

But we are all different... thankfully!

By the way mate, I live in both Australia and the UK YOLO... You Only Live Once...
