I6 Diesel MHEV, deactivate start-stop system, a good idea?
…so nobody seems to question such a thing, remove the, apparently, annoying s/s system… and I ask, is it a good idea to remove it? why is it when it only acts from a certain engine temperature, does not use a starter motor and works exclusively in inopportune and continuous stops, that is to say in the city, where everyone fears the short journeys that cause the big problem of oil “dilution” in these Euro 6 engines… I understand that a stopped engine is not exposed to such a phenomenon, not to mention the fuel saving and mechanical wear… which leads me to think, is it a good idea to disable this system?? in the past yes, when everything ran on Bendix and an auxiliary battery and before Euro 6 there was no fear of inopportune dilutions of the lubricant, but now? I think that has changed, and it does not seem like such a harmful system for the car... quite the opposite, a stopped engine does not wear out, does not suffer dilution and does not consume fuel, I do not understand why everyone thinks it is so bad! That is my opinion. Defender 110 SE I6 D250 23MY

Depending on the situation it can be quite annoying and kind of frightening. Start Stop is a modern feature which has been proven reliable and it doesn't damage the engine. It saves fuel and the Planet Smile
For us coming from Carburettor engines...who dared to switch the engine off at the light? You never knew if the engine was going to start or not...
However If I switch the button off in the defender the next time I get in the car it is always off till I press the button to activate. Simple as that.

I am not sure it saves the planet, but rather it allowed the manufacturer to give their model a few tax benefits on the designed test cycle .

Ok, leaving the health of the planet out… isn't a stopped engine in the best possible condition? I mean it's safe from any incident dilution or wear, right? That's why I think that S/S is not a bad idea these days, right? And in this I6 you can't even hear it when it restarts, and you will save a lot of hours of use over time, and that can only be beneficial! so why disable it then? Defender 110 SE I6 D250 23MY

There are some situations where it is appropriate, for example waiting at a traffic light, but also many where it is not - for example coming to a stop at a roundabout where you will need to pull away in a few seconds. I also find it annoying when moving trailers around or stopping to open and close gates.

By enabling the last user mode setting, it simply remembers my preference on each ignition cycle rather than defaulting to on. Therefore I can have it off for most of the time and then if I come to a situation where I want to let it stop the engine I can just press the button to do so.

In practice I only do this in situations like the traffic light example above, where I am going to be stationary for several minutes and therefore it is worth stopping the engine.

I don't find any inconveniences in roundabouts etc... I let it manage in all situations, since, at least in mine, the restart is so extremely fast, silent, refined and solvent that I even enjoy the situation when it kicks in. At first it was a bit difficult for me, it seemed strange to me because I had always used similar systems, but they were old ones managed with a classic starter motor and it was a definitely horrible experience, but now it is not like that, and we understand each other very well, I am delighted as with everything else of this magnificent car... now I never disconnect it under any circumstances. Defender 110 SE I6 D250 23MY

It’s not really the inconvenience in the roundabout situation, as you say it restarts very quickly and silently. It’s more that I don’t think it’s good for an engine to go from zero oil pressure and 0 rpm to high load instantly such as when pulling away quickly onto a roundabout/junction.

When stopping to open/close gates or hook up trailers it’s just annoying as if the start/stop kicks in when you stop it then shuts off the whole car when you open the door. Disabling it keeps the engine running.

Well, I can agree with that!! 👍🏼…and I also don't like everything turning off when you open a door...it's true too, I don't like that very much.👍🏼👍🏼 Defender 110 SE I6 D250 23MY
