Fuel leak from high pressure connection
Seems to be a leak coming from 1 or several of the connections on the fuel rail. I've never touched a high pressure fuel system before so thought I'd ask around before I start mess with it.



The WSM says nothing about using new pipes once dis-assembled, it also says nothing about any additional seals in the connections. Does that mean I can crack them open and re-torque them to the correct specification as a first attempt? If that fails I'll need a new pipe?
Given how it looks, which one would you say is at fault? I am thinking that the fan and ram air blows everything to the rear so it could be anyone from no 2 and on, although number 4 seems to be in worst condition.
Also the WSM do not mention any need for priming, is it ok to work with these lines without getting trouble with air in the system?

The 2.4 WSM says that the lines must be discarded and not reused, however most people seem to reuse the without problems being common. If the sealing olives become damaged they will leak and the line must be replaced. The tightening sequence for both ends of the lines in the WSM is stage one 5 Nm (4 lbf ft) stage two 35 Nm (26 lbf ft).

It's very hard to say on the basis of your photo what is leaking and where from or even if it is for certainl a fuel leak. I would suggest that you clean the contaminated area thoroughly and see if you can see the where the stain reappears from.

Thanks. Now I also found the line in the WSM stating that the old ones should be discarded, I thought I had read all the warnings but missed this one. Smile

I will clean the area and try to detect where it starts from. The pipes are not cheap so replacing on chance is not attractive.

I am fairly sure it is fuel that is leaking. The front end of the truck has a strange smell to it after extended drives. Also the fuel consumption is a bit all over the place. We just came back from a 4500 km holiday trip, the first half of it was at 12+ l/100 km, going back it was just a bit over 10 l/100 km until after the last fill up, then back at 12 or more. Could be many factors of course and not related to this leak.
