Hello All
I've come across a "new" 110 Puma 2.2 Defender. It is however a "Rest of world" specification and only complies with Euro 2 standards! Would anybody perhaps know the technical differences between this and a Standard EU model? I would assume its missing EGR, DPF and possibly CAT. I would guess ECU is then modified to handle this. I would assume it would be possible to bring back to Euro5 if required for importing country? Also I would guess not much else technically different apart from this? Appreciate any insights. Many Thanks. |

I would have thought a ROW spec 2.2 Puma would have been EURO 4 compliant with an EGR and CAT but not a DPF. Being Euro 2 seems odd.
This post is well worth the long read as it covers a similar issue with a ROW spec vehicle in Europe. https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic87767.html?highlight=euro+5 As for upgrading, yes you can fit an EGR ( inc wiring) and cooler if it’s not there. You can fit a DPF (inc differential pressure sensor plus pipes and wiring) if it’s not there. You can get a map to make it EURO 5 spec. However all that will cost a lot of money and you may still have issues registering it as a Euro 5 vehicle. If going the upgrade route why not go to Euro 6 as Euro 5 vehicles are incurring charges in an increasing number of cities. In conclusion, unless the 2.2 is an amazing bargain it’s unlikely to be cost effective to convert. |

Thanks for response. Car was destined for West Africa. Not seen it in person so cannot say what it does or does not have installed. Yeah, I suspect it may not be worth it either. It may be a case that I can leave it at Euro 2 and pay a fee for import country. Then just have to deal with the various City restrictions. Or maybe it is Euro4...Of course if cheap enough to convert then it could be an option. Just hard to know exact differences. LR page does reflect some were 100% EU2? https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com/p...and-rover/
The car does not come with a COC to confirm and it has never been registered in any country. |

I'm not sure that an EU2 TDCi Defender would be legal in this country.

100% not legal in UK or Europe. In my little corner of the world I'm still trying to find out. We have a tax based on C02 when imported. But the tax cost and technical regulations for being road legal are most likely different. So I can probably import it but then not sure if I can use it legally. If it comes in as EU2 and marked as such I think it will only have to hit EU2 levels. Even if its EU5 or EU6 the CO2 is the same!

It might have a Cat in place of a DPF, as the 300Tdi became EU2 with the introduction of a Cat, EGR and fuel pump tweaks.
The VIN will show the true intent whether the 8th character is R (2.2 non EU5), T (2.4 EU2) or something else. I'm not aware of a letter to differentiate between EU2/4 for the 2.2. If it was already registered in another country (i.e. "used") and over 10 years old, then it could be registered in the UK. There might be a route to then convert to a Swiss reg via some sort of mutual recognition scheme. LR Workshop Find a Defender's history and spec: https://defender.lrworkshop.com |

I've requested the VIN, lets see.
Its not looking hopeful at all. The response from the Local Road Traffic office is below. Since it's "new" and never registered it must comply with current rules. Still waiting on response for specialist import company.

Yeah, Tend to agree with you about not getting mixed up in it. Lets see. Never hurts to look. Does look like it will be near impossible. But for the right price everything is possible.
100% new and has circa 10km on the clock. Never registered. Build date 2012. |

In France you can get individual approvals (costly, cumbersome and risky), but if in Switzerland they don't respect the original manufacturing date you would have to meet all current emission and safety regulations, which even with enough money you would never ever pass. One challenge in France is that you first have to import and then if you cannot register it you either need to export or scrap the car.

And this is the same in Switzerland. Have even found where to go. Waiting back on a couple of importers for opinions. Appeal is the low KM's and the fact that no EGR or DPF means it should be simple and a bit more reliable long term. But suspect risk is not worth it and there is also no warranty...

just a couple of thoughts;
possibly not got Pezo (?) injectors, if it all goes wrong - suspect you could strip and get your money back that way? |

If its new and unregistered can it be imported as a collection of parts and then used to rebuild a written off existing vehicle?
Daft as it sounds the opportunity to build one properly with all rust proofing, sound deadening and little touches that would make long term ownership a bit more 21st century would be a nice project! |

Hi there, JLR sold the 2.2 ROW spec in MY2012 and MY2013 which is indeed EURO2. From MY2014 onwards only EURO4 and EURO5 spec available. Engine with EGR but no DPF and no CAT |
