Apparently Park assist is only available on 2022 models. Anyone know why and what the differences are?

Apparently it’s hit or miss to enable via gap tool. I’ve had success with other activations but park assist did not work. Like some others I’ve read about I can find the parking spot but the start button remains disabled. I’ve a new 2024 model. |

There is no park assist at all on the Defender. No Defender has had it and there is no installed hardware.
That some have managed to hack in park assist in the software is just exposing areas of the software that is used on other vehicles, this being a common software platform for LR. Some elements that use existing cameras look to be working but the hardware modules that actually park and take over the steering are missing. |

I’ve only ever seen of it being working up to the point of visible on screen and identifying a slot but no further than that. Without a motor to turn the wheel independently they all crash out there. Do you have a link?

They all have electric power steering which can steer the vehicle. It’s how the lane keep assist and advanced tow assist (where it steers the trailer for you in reverse) all work.

Interesting. That makes sense. I was not aware the Defender had reverse tow assist. I can only find one single video online at all where someone says they managed to get reverse assist work.
I have to say I’ve had it on my last three cars and every time it’s always easier to do it the old way. So when I do get the OBDC tool I’ll give that a miss. |

My 2022MY P300 has the optional Towing Pack and this included Advanced Tow Assist according to my personalised brochure.
Diver assistance features also included "360 Parking Aid" [/i] |

360 parking aid is just the external camera viewpoints.
As far as I can tell from literature the towing aid is just the lines, I can’t find anything around it steering for you, but I don’t have and you do, so you will know better. |

Ok. So knowing that the steering unit is not fitted to most vehicles my working theory is that if you have advanced tow assist it means they do fit the steering unit and so you can hack the Pivi software to enable.
If you don’t you can hack the Pivi software to show the camera enabled parts (find slot etc) but it then bombs out when you get to the park element as the hardware is missing to steer. Working theory. Needs some digging. |

They all have the steering unit. You can activate Advanced Tow Assist in software with the IIDTool.
As I said above the steering unit is used for the lane keeping. Almost all modern cars have it built in to the electric power steering units. |

To back Retroanaconda's statement that ALL Defenders have the electric power steering so are capable of self steer, the steering rack and power assist unit is common to all years. (The part number is succeeded several times but they are all compatible)
I suspect that park assist was intended to be a feature but was scrubbed for whatever reason, in the workshop manual the outermost park sensors are described as "park assist sensors" whilst the inner four are described as "parking aid sensors". Its likely that the success or otherwise of getting park assist functioning is dependant not on a "hardware part" but a combination of installed software, specific combination of sensor modules fitted and the correct bits set in the CCF. |
