I think that's actually a 272309. 5.5" x 16" 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power

No Land-Rover wheels have carried the number 272508, but as Hazza suggests it is probably 272309.

272309 was the part number for the early LWB rims, in which case it is a 5.5 x 16 inch rim, with a 33mm offset and a rivetted nave plate and is suitable only for tubed tyres. These were superseded by 669690 which is essentially similar but according to some sources has slightly larger stud holes to allow for the change in wheel stud thread form which occurred during Series production.

Later both were superseded by ANR4636 which had the same general dimensions but was of welded construction and has beads suitable for tubeless tyres.

As a 5.5 rivetted tube-type rim it was designed for 7.00x16 or 7.50x16 tube-type tyres and it is generally not advisable to go wider than 7.50". This, and the need for tube-compatible tyres, greatly limits tyre choice for these rims now.

Probably 7.50 x 16 tyres. Technically you shouldn't fit a 235/85 as most tyre makers will say 6.0" wide rim and if these are 5.5" they are too narrow, but a 235 will physically fit.

Make sure you always run tubes, could be dangerous without. Not all modern tyres work well with tubes, it depends what they look like on the inside, as some have a lot of texuring, that can quickly wear through an inner tube.

Thanks all

That's some good knowledge Thumbs Up

They will probably go on a Series 1 so a 7.50 tyre should be ok? I would like a ;chunkier Tyre if possible but if this is my choice..)

This type of thing?

Honestly, they are probably terrible tyres and a very old tread style. If you plan to drive on or off the road, there are way better tyres. Although a lack of choice in 7.50 x 16, which should fit a Series 1, but is taller than standard for that vehicle. But there are 7.0 options out there.

For a Series 1 a 205 x 16 (205/80R16) would also work and give lots of choice. Although not as tall as a 7.50 (28.9" vs 31.7").

I run Michelin XZL 7.50x16’s on my Series 1.
Can be run tubed or tubeless to suit your rims.

You should be OK running a 7.50 on a Series One, although in the old days the "larger" option was a 7.00x16. I have run 7.50s on all my S1s for 45+ years (Avon Rangers, Michelin XCLs, Michelin XZLs) without any problems (that is on both 80" and 86" vehicles.

If I was buying a 7.50 now I would without any doubt opt for the Michelin XZL. It is an excellent (albeit expensive) tyre suitable for use with or without a tube, and has a fairly traditional tread pattern which doesn't look stupid on a Series One.

You need to fairly careful with tubes now (and remember you must run tubes on those rims), since most tubeless tyres are unsuitable for taking tubes. This is due to the inside of the tyre having irregularities or rough/sharp moulding pattern which f course don't matter when tubeless but which chafe tubes very rapidly. You should only fit a tube in a tyre which is designed to take a tube.
