Cheers. I did spin the impeller and no real play that I could feel.

You could also disassemble it and check both ends, waste gate actuator and vanes. For this you will need some seal kit. Puma 110" SW

In my experience the vanes on the impeller side get jagged.
I can't understand why as it's all post filter, but, irrespective, that's my findings. I don't know td5 units as all mine are 300s, but check the waste gate actuator too. If that's all seized up you won't want to use that one. If you've got an air compressor just blowing air into the actuator input should move it. I don't meen coupling it properly - just with a blow gun and a leaky union When you fit the unit spend some time with a little syringe or something loading it with oil. Noone ever seems to get the replacement cartridges to work and I do wonder if inadequately priming is the problem. As in load it up and leave it over night or whatever, and then go again. |

My motto is just keep a clean air filter, what goes in, goes through.
Lots of people run, and run, the air filter till it’s clogged up badly, and invariably by that stage it loses its filtration efficiency, the bad stuff can then get by, minimally, but still happens bit to mention the restriction and recused performance and economy. Not specific to LR’s but all vehicles, really LR’s are good, at least in U.K. environment as the air inlet is relatively high and clean with a good size air box and filter. Quite a few cars out the have the air inlet about 14” off the ground. ![]() Not just for picking up dust and dirt, but good at picking up water laden spray and flooding too. And that doesn’t end well when the driver thinks they have a boat and “it doesn’t seem to want to go no more”. ![]() ![]() ⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Not on a TD5, it's a fixed vane, wastegate type turbo unlike the Puma. |

Ah I see, my mistake I know very little about the TD5. Wasn’t posted in the TD5 section so presumed it was Puma.

I did mention td5 in the first post.....

If they both look and feel the same, check the waste gate / actuator and then just fit one of them.
Just because you have two of them, doesn't mean to say one is better than the other - they may both be absolutely fine! : ) |

IT's only a 20 minute job to swap them so I'd give it a go.
There is a risk is of snapping the studs if theyre not new however... ![]() |

That was my thought - swap and see. Might need new gaskets first.
The bolts for the exhaust down pipe and manifold bolts have not been removed for many years. The waste gate on one of them is adjusted differently to the other. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

IIRC you need around [20] psi to make the actuator move the rod/spindle
