Yakima Spareride on 18” Steel Spare Wheel

Hello all,

I have purchased a Yakima Spareride Bike Carrier to fit onto the spare wheel of my 90. Without the carrier fitted, there is just enough thread for the 18” spare wheel. However when offering up the bracket onto the spare wheel carrier, then refitting the spare wheel, there is only about 1/3 of bolt threads remaining for the spare wheel bolts to be secured to, which is insufficient. The solution would be to fit longer bolts to the carrier, however the existing bolts are 8 sided and look to be captive. I’ve enclosed a few photos below. Has anyone overcome this issue? Thanks in advance.

What about this....

your 18" steel wheel has 5 stud pick up, but carrier only has 3 studs.
Mount wheel, draw the 2 unused holes from the wheel to the carrier.
Centre pop the 2 drawn circles and drill out to Tapping drill size M14 x 1.5
Get two M14 'set bolts' and insert into, the back, of the newly tapped threads, tightly !!
Using your spare wheel locking nuts assemble wheel onto the two new bolts and tighten.
You can use three other standard wheel nuts to finish.

Using the 4th & 5th holes could work although they align with the raised sections of the back of the wheel carrier so there’s not a flat surface for the now bolts to sit on. If the existing 3 bolts are removable then they could be replaced with longer bolts, but then there is the potential issue of ensuring they remain captive.

I did wonder if the wheel carriers for models with alloy wheels have longer bolts, but after a search for used carriers they have the same LR code as the one I have fitted.

If anyone has fitted a Yakima Spareride to a spare alloy wheel, did you have sufficient thread to secure the wheel?
