Most expensive hourly rate in the UK goes to…
Had the pleasure of Lloyd Land Rover Ripon quoting me for some work recently. Almost fainted when they quoted me £196 an hour for labour!!! Can anyone beat that?

My wife used to work at a VW dealer, when she left 6 years ago their hourly rate was £115. Allowing for 6 years of increases it looks like all main dealers are in the same ball park.

Well if Guildford is anything to go by, someone has to pay for THREE buildings, four receptionists, at least two courtesy staff to welcome you and take your keys, call centre staff, customer handler, parts people, coffee machine, coffee, cleaners……bare with me folks, I haven’t even got to the service staff…….car cleaners, sales staff, service staff, and a partridge in a pear tree (to keep it seasonal).

To be honest, that’s a lot of people, and if I am honest, couldn’t care a jot about most of them when I have taken my wife’s car in.

At least with my Indy, the guy taking my keys is the person that’s doing all the work.

It was Inc the VAT. They were quoting me to fit the rear recovery eyes while they had the bumper off for a warranty job. 1 hour apparently to do up 8 bolts. He just didn’t get it when I challenged the value in that hourly rate. Wouldn’t do a deal either, offered him £100 to do it instead given that it was only 10 mins work while the bumper was off, but he just kept saying that the standard is £196. Just walked away. I paid a barrister less than that recently!!

This is exactly the problem. The overhead they have to recover is ridiculous, but I’m sure there are plenty with more money than sense that would just pay. I could afford to pay it, but I just don’t see it as good value for money to pay £25 to the guy doing the job and £171 to cover the building, staff, coffee etc. which is non-value adding. I’d much rather pay my Indy £60 an hour.

The bloke doing the services, or more accurately kid, will be an apprentice on £7.50 an hour.

You can’t do a deal because LR will dictate the price they must charge for everything.

I believe the mechanics or technicians (or kid Zed Thumbs Up ) will probably have a fixed time to carry out that task and will receive bonus on the difference.

Eye watering cost but then when you buy £70K plus vehicles, don’t whinge at paying premium rates for main dealer work. You pays your money you takes your choice.
