Usually a good clear out up the road and make sure the tester does the emission test with it still hot.

AlliSport say they do a patch for the ECU to compensate for no dpf, but I haven't done it myself

No DPF on a 2.4.
Emissions test cannot detect whether a Cat is fitted or not. It doesn’t test for what the Cat is supposed to remove. 2011 130 Utility Body 2005 110 Van |

Did you pass your MOT with the empty expansion Box? I looking to get a 3" Demand Engineering exhaust, so will have the look a like Cat empty expansion box, so it appears to have a Cat fitted, but in reality there is no cat in the expansion box. |

A hollowed out cat will pass visual inspection, whether it will pass the emissions test will depend on how clean your truck runs. WARNING.

Whatever way you wrap it up it is illegal to remove cat and or dpf depending on what truck you have..
If they are running right they will still pass the current mot emissions test and with a shell the visual inspection as well.. Never had an issue yet🤞😁 |

I think we have to give the mot testers a bit credit here cause no way do the shells fitted to the aftermarket exhausts look like a proper cat or dpf.. 🫣🤣 |

I would like to keep my CAT, but it seems every aftermarket exhaust is only made with a shell or straight pipe. Otherwise I have to keep my standard size bore and only have a stainless steel CAT back exhaust. I cannot find a 3" exhaust which has a CAT. For my sports car, I bought, off the shelf, a 3" full stainless steel exhaust from turbo back, which has a highflow CAT installed, so this passes MOT no problem. I cannot seem to find this kind of exhaust for a Defender

well for the purposes of this discussion , id be asking why you want to go to 3 inch pipework, and ill assume thats to help the engine breathing and efficiency, so why would you then want to fit something back into the system that will cause a restriction and detract from the benefits... a bit simplistic but im sure you see where im coming from...

My exhaust is rusting, and needs replacing, so I started looking around for a Stainless Steel one. I have a remap, intercooler etc. So I started looking for a Stainless Steel exhaust with a highflow CAT, as fitted to my sports car. These have a larger cell construction, flow better and still comply with MOT's. I don't want to fall foul of the law. This is when I found that all the companies I've looked at don't offer this. It appears I only have the option of a standard exhaust, or an illegal one. I suppose I could have a custom one made, but I would have thought this would be offered as standard, seeing this is the law. Many other companies offer sports exhausts with highflow CAT's for sports cars.

If you have a 90 buy the Bowler cat back exhaust. It’s legal and compared to the Demand exhausts I’ve seen the welding is far neater, and imo it sounds better too. I think JLR will be stocking them now Bowler are gone. WARNING.

Though it would be more costly I’d like to see a high flow sports cat, cost inducing yes, but beneficial to engine whilst not putting out what shouldn’t be.
I presume with a 3” sports cat, it’s presumed people just won’t pay, I guess you’d probably be looking at around £800 to £1200 just for the downpipe without the rest. How much is the gen one? £600 to £900 seems to spring to mind? $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

When the flange broke off my cat about 8 years ago a new genuine front pipe for a 2.4 was around £1200.plus VAT.

Ah yes, I can quite imagine with the size and precious metals contained it’s not surprising.
I guess breakers would have one, cheaper, but you never know what impact damage, fatigue and or rapid removal could do with that, resulting in a possibly cheaper, but more unreliable part. There are 3” universal cats out there, and sports cats but they’d need fabrication and obviously welding etc, they have different specs for capture. I’d be interested in a high flow 3” sports cat one day if Demand did those, I’d not be keen on empty. Wouldn’t be cheap, but nothing good is. That being said, would there be much to gain between the LR factory fit, a hi flow sports cat, compared to without and internal, my guess is little difference. Does anyone know the specifications of the LR one? If that is known then you can get a sort of benchmark to compare with. Presumably they have a flow rate and a capture spec, and that likely declines over time? Blackwolf - You probably know a lot more about them, than I do. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |
