Driving modes
On a coil spring Defender with no rear optional locking differential etc does it matter which mode you use for driving on the road?

l usually use "ECO" but yesterday l had accidentally selected the "grass/gravel/snow" mode and the Defender was smoother in day to day driving.
Probably due to the more progressive power delivery in this mode but it was also smoother in slow moving traffic as the transmission didn't disengage as it sometimes does when slowing down.

I use comfort but you can use GGS in day to day driving, I tend to use it more at this time of year. Personally I don’t use eco, I’ve tried it but don’t see the point of it on a 2.3t brick Laughing 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

The changes to gear changes / throttle response / etc are pretty significant.

Obviously use GGS/sand/mud ruts/rock crawl etc as appropriate for off road driving but I do find ECO mode / sport mode useful sometimes too. Cheers, David

I’ve been using Eco mode mainly and can’t fault it. When needing a bit more response from the throttle or gearbox, it’s easy enough to switch to Sport temporarily and then get back to Eco - it definitely helps with economy and hasn’t compromised performance too much compared to Comfort.

At the LR Experience, the instructor told me he uses GGS on the road for heavy rain/leaves/cold conditions.

I mean you could technically use any TR mode on the road other than Rock Crawl, which requires the use of low range. I usually keep mine in Comfort or Dynamic (which I had programmed in) when on-road. ECO is useless. I don't get better fuel economy and the throttle and transmission calibration is way to soft.

I have Terrain Response 2, and sometimes I leave it in Auto and let the car figure out what is best. It works incredibly well, but it is a reactive system. Selecting the best Terrain Response mode for what you're driving over is always going to be better than the car figuring it out, because it will be pre-loaded for the terrain you're driving over. Grass/Gravel/Snow is best in light to moderate snow, wet grass and loose gravel. Also in heavy rain it makes a difference. If you are in deep, soft snow, then Sand is going to be the best setting, as the throttle response is initially soft, and then sharpens up significantly. It also allows for more wheel slip and holds gears longer.

I also have the Configurable Terrain Response, but I've only used it a handful of times and haven't really bothered to go experiment with it. 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟏𝟎 𝐒 𝐏𝟑𝟎𝟎 (Pangea Green over Acorn/Lunar)

I drive mine around in Snow/Gravel/Etc.. mode at highway speeds with no issue. It snows here a lot, so that's a mode I use frequently.

Last weekend my wife and I drove our 22 110 SE 1000 miles over the course of 16 hours straight. We used ECO mode and managed to get 20mpg on average.

On the way home, we forgot to put on eco mode and so in Comfort (the default) we were getting 16.

I have the expedition rack, widdle wadder and lunchbox fitted so my truck is no aerodynamic maestro. 2022 Defender 110 SE P400 Tasman Blue Expedition and Cold weather package
