Post Clutch Change Gear Change Woes
Hi Everyone,

first time posting here so I hope I am doing it right Smile

I was hoping to get some opinions from more experienced folks on what my problem might be.

2014 Defender and the clutch failed. It had been rattling for a while so I guess the springs were going one by one.

The local garage changed the clutch for me and I picked it up today, but now the gear changes are not so good.

There is no play at all in the shifter when I am in neutral. Usually I could wobble it al around.

I can get into first and second by going straight up and down (rather than pushing left first). Fifth and sixth are where they should be.

3rd and forth are really hard to find. I need to push over to the right exactly the right amount but there is no indication what the right amount is and its easy to over or undershoot and end if in 5th or 1st.

Of course the garage is sure it was always that way. Any ideas what they might have done wrong? I'd like to make some suggestions as to what they could look at.

thanks in advance everyone!

John

It could be the lower gear stick assembly. No Guts, No Glory.

Without a doubt they haven't positioned the gear lever correctly on the box. The WSM procedure for this (see image below) requires a special tool however it isn't difficult to do without the tool if you check for correct gear engagement before putting the trim back in and adjust accordingly.

It sounds as though they are not really competent to do do the job, this is very basic spannering. Sad

You might want to read this thread on the same subject.

The tool is inexpensive form the officia supplier but you cannot buy one without being an account holder. It is available from Dingocroft however (but at a HUGE mark-up): https://www.dingocroft.co.uk/acatalog/Alig...8-561.html

After I’d changed my clutch my gear selection was also poor, I simply hadn’t seated the gear lever into the ball socket correctly. It did mean removing all of the trim again, however that was the hardest part.

This is really useful! Thanks blackwolf. I'm worried about whether they are up to the job too Shocked They used to do good work but lots of turnover recently.
