TD5 Relay id in ECU compartment
Cannot find this anywhere, I know the yellow one which is hooked onto the side of the seatbox is for my fuel pump.

Does anyone know what the black one next to it is for?

I am looking for a 12v switched live (no power when key is off) in this seatbox area.

Many thanks for any replies.

Usually 3 relays. One pump, one power to Powertrain ECU, one to glowplugs.

Just the answer I was looking for with my 2005 D90.
Been having starting problems and the suggestion from Gigglepin was to remove and replace each relay as the aren't the best, and cause problems. I was interested to know what they actually do. The starting or rather non starting problem appears to have ceased today after this probing.

However would like to know if this is a common fault and if there is a longer term solution to these relays.

Does anyone know if these are still the same set up and location in the latest Defender or has LR modified them and can I upgrade to that modification if any ?

Thanks

Peter

A very nice main dealer electrician once cured a problem with my underseat relays.
He used a tiny pair of pliers to tighten the Lucar type connectors.
He told me that bad contacts in the relay sockets was the cause of most electrical problems.
He wouldn't even accept the price of a drink for his efforts.
Thanks Conway Land Rovers. Very Happy

I believe that the Black relay is for the ABS, can't be 100% sure though Smile

If you do move / play with them, make sure you push the wires up towards the realys afterwards.

Like a previous post said, this is the cause of most of the problems, especially on the fuel pump relay. The contact between relay and crimp connection is not very solid and moves a bit when played with, then it will start to burn up and cause problems.

The white wire with the green stripe or rings connected to pin number 33 on the black ecu plug is a ignition controlled power feed that you can tap into. Any white wire with a green stripe or ring can be used for this anywhere in the vehicle.

That wire is only suitable for powering a relay though, you dont really want to be connecting anything to it direct.

Usual British standard of wiring. Think this is where the Jap motors exceed in their reliability in my exeperience.
Has there ever been an aftermarket fix for the relay faults ? As seems very common on TD5 's ? or is it a case of doing ones own re-wiring so you know its all ok.
