Australia 2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 SW Alaska White
MIL Illuminated with code P0402
Hi there, first time defender owner and first post to the forum.

After searching through old topics I cant quite find the answer to my question so hoping someone can help me out.

2013 2.2 Puma recently purchased, 155km, has had an ECU upgrade and EGR delete by previous owner. MIL light has illuminated throwing code P0402 EGR A Flow Excessive Detected. After code is cleared it returns after a few driving cycles.

If the EGR has been deleted why would this error code be detected? Is it fair to say that the ECU shouldn't even be detecting the EGR? Is there something else that can cause the error? (Vehicle is in Australia no DPF.)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Do you have a snorkel or rai?

There is a code that can be known to be nuisance of similar nature related to this, some people get it, others donโ€™t.

Iโ€™ve not had one with a Safari snorkel, Iโ€™ve heard of others with a Mantec rai that have. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Might pay you to replace the MAF sensor, in the mean time clean it with brake or MAF cleaner.
(Donโ€™t touch or disturb elements).

As it came back, it seems a bit more persistent but there is presence of nuisance codes of that nature.
The 2.4 has had it before as well.

Presumably you get a lot of dust, a pre cleaner might be of interest or do you already have one? $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Is the EGR just mapped out, or is it in addition blanked with a plate? I am wondering if perhaps it is stuck partly open.

Which company did the engine map and EGR delete ? As itโ€™s worth giving them a call.

Also in addition to your MAF sensor give your MAP sensor and Air Charge sensor a clean. Plus check wiring to all.

Locations in this post for 2.4 and 2.2. https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69503.html?highlight=sensor

Also check wiring and connection to EGR valve.

@Ianh I actually reached out to the workshop that did the delete, and unfortunately they replied to my email inquiry by telling me to contact the original owner of the car as he could tell me what other work was done to the vehicle. "Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to pinpoint what the concern can be as we have only done the EGR delete & blank on the Defender with no concerns since we done it in September."

As this whole EGR thingy is all very new to me I didn't know how to respond to that.

All that is on the receipt is - 'Customer also requested EGR delete, we extracted the ๏ฌle and sent it to our code writer to rewrite the ๏ฌle and send it back for us to upload to the ECU'

Gave the MAF sensor a clean 2 days ago and fault returned (slow process of elimination) so I will clean the MAP and air sensor as suggested. ๐Ÿ‘

EGR had delete and blank done in September this year. If there is a physical blank and delete how would the ECU still pick up the fault? Is it only the EGR that can throw the same fault code?

I gave the MAF sensor a clean yesterday (as far as my untrained eye goes it looked very clean) and after that the MIL reappeared. Replace could be an option. ๐Ÿ‘

As far as the pre-cleaner goes I am unsure as to whether I have one. What does that bad boy look like? And where would I find him?
