Forum survey : breakdown + immobility issues
After 4 breakdown and immobility issues on my MY2012, I think a forum survey related to this subject would be great. It helps us

1) figure out typical failures to come
2) get knowledge about upgrades / possible fixes / tools to have
3) classify our trucks with respect to others and improve our service strategies
4) prepare the truck and the tool set for overlanding / road trips / holidays

I suggest the following structure for a list :

-----------

engine type / MY / Defender type / mileage (mileage @ date of purchase) / exceptional conditions : O (offrad) 0 (=no) ... 9 (any time) / T (towing) 0....9 / C ( city , commuter) 0....9 / upgrades (e.g. EGR off, Ashcroft spline, tuning BMS 140 hp ... )

so if you choose 9 (any time) for offroad the others are limited to 0 (no) but the sum of all may not reach 9 because other modes (motorway, roads, overlanding) do also exist

and the breakdowns : @ mileage - type of failure

Mr. Green = you arived to fix the issue and continue your trip

Neutral = you were able to drive in limp mode

Sad = you were able to drive in limp mode and/or with restrictions (e.g. power loss from split turbo hose)

Banging Head = your trip has come to an end , you weren't able to move any more

Idea = possible upgrades or tools you purchased after the breakdown

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I suggest not to list issues on non tdci Defenders or causes by others like flat tyres, (faulty) batteries (car + key), fuel errors, stuck car offroad, accident, fraud, vandalism, lack of service, missed JLR service bulletins (e.g. oil pump , front axle clamps, ...)-
You can give two smileys if another solution would have been possible / became available later

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOW here,s my data :

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2.2 / MY 2012 / 110 CSW / 150K (000) / O : 2 / T : 3 / C : 1 / Ashcroft spline installed, roof tent + wooden camping furniture inside

Neutral Mr. Green @ 20K : DPF sensor loose + red DPF lamp Idea Nanocom for DPF reset

Banging Head @ 55 K : output spline falure + complete power loss Idea Ashcroft output spline mod

Sad @ 80 K : turbo hose split + power loss in limp mode

Banging Head 145 K : clutch failure + cltch does not engage any more Idea MY 2015 upgraded clutch

Off-topic : we're just talking about tdci Defenders i.e. FORD engine

10-year-old Puma Defenders are they really old cars that are not reliable any more ?
Should we treat them like veterane cars not appropriate for all day use nor long distance trips nor professional use (they still run as police cars, fire engines and for the army here in France).

Statistics is exactly what I wanted to initiate in order to learn about my 12 year old Defender compared to others (same age, same engine).

Oh dear oh dear I thought it was an interesting discussion about how to keep your car reliable. If there is an admin out there, please delete all posts.

There you go, deleted posts. Enjoy your day Julie

2.2 / MY 2015 / 110 SW / 65K km (000) / travel car with pop-top roof etc. @ 2400kg
no breakdowns

Good idea, however...
I struggle a bit to classify my usage on those fine scales. To get good data I'd have to analyse 10 yrs of ownership in detail :/
While I'm sorry for your breakdowns, I think you've hit three of the more common defects. For the output spline there is a very detailed statistics thread here somewhere. That mileage for the clutch (even if you mean 145K km not miles) seems ok to me - knowing that those springs will eventually fail.
The loose DFP sensor @20K seems too early (have seen this on passenger cars @250km), but all in all I wouldn't consider a Defender with those defects 'unreliable'. Of course, each breakdown also has more or less impact and emotional effect depending on when and where it happens.
