Option A: remove cylinder head and do a proper job.
Option B: turn engine so that the port you are working has the valves fully closed and thoroughly remove all the crud before moving on to the next one (blow the loosened muck out with an airline). Option C: don't worry about the stuff in the head. Consider fitting a catch can (legal) and blanking the EGR (not legal) in order to stop it building up again afterwards. |

I fashioned a scraper out of one of those commercially available diy wood scrapers..ground it down till the end got to the back of the port and the valve /stem...used a vacuum to cleat most of the crap and gave it a good turn over with the plugs out to make sure the cyls were clear

And don't forget to make sure the small opening in the manifold wall that leads to the map sensor is clear and blown/washed out๐

hi, there is a small triangular port in the side wall of the intake manifold that connects via a small passage to the hole in the manifold that the map sensor plugs into... I better add that mine is a 2.2, and not a 2.4, so not sure if its the same.here is a picture of said port on mine which was covered in carbon before cleaning..
Click image to enlarge ill mention a couple things which you may or may not have considered already.. it may be worth doing your glow plugs while you are in there with good access, and I also replaced my starter motor as again access was good... I replaced it as I was doing some compression testing and on a couple occasions it had not responded to the key so decided to just replace it and at least rule that out if the issue reoccured... what I hadn't foreseen was the huge difference it made to the speed with which the engine now turns over...in fact I had to go look to make sure id actually put my glow plugs back in, it is that quick now... the old starter must have been really tired .. you may feel or know thats unnecessary in your case but just thought id mention it |
