Trailer reverse light feed
I'm looking for suggestions for where next...
I recently noticed that my trailer reverse light doesn't come on. So far, sporadic fault-chasing has got me back as far as the towing electrics socket which doesn't seem to be providing a live feed when in reverse. The vehicle reverse light comes on (as do all the other trailer lights, at the appropriate times).
It is a standard 2014 Puma CSW with the socket fitted from new. I've owned it from new so I know there has been no messing about with the electrics.
My 'known unknowns' include:
- Is there something obvious I could have missed?
- is there a fuse for the trailer electrics reverse (the handbook doesn't list one)?
- where does the towing wiring loom go upstream from the socket? If it plugs in to the main loom then where?
- What colour wire is the reverse light live feed (is it consistent between the towing loom and the main loom)?
- Which pin in the trailer socket carries the reverse feed? (If all else fails I'll run a wire from the reverse light to it.)
TIA. Cheers, Guy.

if its a std 7pin 12N style the it does NOT support the Reverse........

https://www.westerntowing.co.uk/trailer-ca...g-diagram/

if its the later 13pin type then its pin 8 / Pink

as for the std harness it travels from the 12N socket up the rear of the OSR wheel arch (behind the plastic liner cover normally) and plugs in near the top of the arch

I wouldn't think the 13 pin socket was ever standard on Defenders. The 2015/2016 wiring diagrams indicate only 7 pin socket was used.

If the OP is using a converter 12N 7 pole -> ISO 11446 13 pole only the original core functions of the 12N are passed through:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_standard...connectors

Go to the USA and they can do the whole thing with 4 connectors, seems a bit simpler and in the end more reliable.

There is the reverse feed to the tow bar loom though from memory. I’m sure that is where I picked up the supply for my extra reverse lights.

Thanks for that- mystery solved then.
(For completeness, the trailer was supplied by Ifor Williams with a thingy to convert the plug. I have no recollection whether they mentioned that the reversing light wouldn't work.) Cheers, Guy.

No tow electrics were ever "standard". All accessory/dealer fit.

13 pin electrics accessory was available from new for Pumas (at the very least, maybe Td5)  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Martin is right.

There is 12N, which is the basics excluding reverse, which most have -
sometimes with an additional 12S socket. Which does have the reverse features. So there is two sockets on the towing vehicle if 12N and 12S.

Then there is 13 pin, which homogenises both sockets into one, plus adaptors you can use to swap between various options.

So for example if you have 12N on the towing vehicle, and a 13pin trailer, you can get an adaptor but the reverse lights won’t work. But indicators etc etc will do.

I expect you can get a 12n & 12s adaptor to 13 pin.

Mine has 12N, ideally it would be better to have 13pin on the towing vehicle as it then has the accessible supply such as the reverse light power, but you can adapt back to 12n if you have a 7 pin 12n trailer plug.

Hope that helps.

I’ve often looked at going to fit the 13pin, but never got around to it.
Is there much involved with fitting? ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

The genuine Land Rover defender 13pin socket and loom is part number LR005919, circa £170 inc vat.

Note , if you fit the 13 pin socket it is tested as part of the MOT ( the 7 pin 12n is not ) so you need to ensure it’s part of your pre MoT checks.

That is really good info to know Ian, I wonder why that is?
Presumably it is because the 13pin is typically considered the most modern / recent fit option. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

There is a plug behind the RH rear wheelarch mud cover, into which the towing wiring loom plugs. Hard to believe I know but I think it sounds like there may have been a bit of water ingress behind the cover (held on I think with 2 screws, you'll need an 8mm socket). I'd take the cover off off and have a check of the state of the plug - not hard with the wheel off. It has connections to support 13 pins (whether they all do anything I don't know but the trailer reverse lights and the permanent 12v work)
