Wind noise and how to avoid it with light pods and roof rack
I have an L663 110 kitted out woth lots of Urban mods including the light pods.

I’m looking to add off grid camping items such as rails, roof rack and roof tent plis ladder and side box.

Does anyone have experience with all of these and how best to set up the roof rails, rack and tent to minimise wind noise on the motorway?

Thanks in advance!

Drive really slowly - and avoid driving on windy days? Not helpful - I know - but aside from using JLR bits where they should have tested all items to check they don't introduce wind buffet at speed, or LOUD wind noise, that's probably your only option if using aftermarket parts.

Fairings help.

But the less aerodynamic your rig is, the louder its going to be. There's really no getting around it unfortunately. 2022 Defender 110 SE P400 Tasman Blue Expedition and Cold weather package

Our 110 has a RhinoRack fitted to it, and it sounds like it is going to take off going highway speeds (110 km/h). I find that closing the sunroof cover helps it, and you can just ignore it with some music. According to the place we got it from/got it installed at, there is a special piece that reduces wind noise that whoever installed the rack (them!!!) didn't put on. However, I doubt it would have fixed things.

Interested to know if the Urban Light Pods add wind noise?

My 110 with the Factory Roof Rack, Gear Carrier and Ladder do add some wind noise but I am thinking about switching up to the V8 Carpathian with some Urban bits so curious to know if things will be quieter - well apart form the exhaust Laughing

Well my roof is quite full. We are travelling about a year know with the defender with rooftoptent and all.

I have the frontrunner rack with a vehicle wide lightbar (its awesome! ) .
The wind noise was the most with an empty rack without the lightbar and the deflector. After that its quite manageable. Not as quite as stock but certainly not bad.
Opening the roof window about 80kmh is not advisable but i didn’t do that anyhow above 100kmh.

What makes the noise (like whistling) is the flat bars itself, stuff like straps creating a type of snare. Get rid of the “sharp” edges and there wont be any whistling. However a low rumble there will be always at high speed.
