1997 Defender 110 300 Tdi CSW Alpine White

Elring Head Gasket - No Hole version

I ordered what was supposed to be a 0-hole head gasket from Rock Auto, that was supposed to be equivalent to LVB500230, and they sent me an Elring 565.860, which is a 2-hole MLS gasket. It comes up on their website as equivalent to LVB500230.

Should they have sent me an Elring 432.830, which comes up as equivalent to an ERR7154? (432.830 is a fibre gasket).

Elring 565.860 comes up as a 0-hole (or 4-hole...same thing) LVB500230, but has 2 holes in the tab.

My 1997 ROW 300Tdi has a 0-hole gasket in right now, and has done for at least 11 years.

I am confused.

Anyone know?

You’d be fine with the one you’ve bought on an old Tdi, I’d be worried if it was the other way round. It’s not going to make that much difference in the grand scheme of it. The MLS gasket is a much better gasket.

The MLS gasket is better. If you originally had a no-hole gasket and now have a 2-hole, I'd be measuring the piston protrusion to make sure it's allowable. The difference between gaskets is 0.2mm. Also measure the gasket to confirm, 2-hole should be 1.4mm thick LR Workshop

The gasket 565.860 SHOULD be a 4-hole MLS gasket according to Elring, but I've ordered the gasket twice now, only for it to be 2-hole both times.

I just want to fit a no hole (which is the same as 4 hole per LR bulletin in 1997).

Might I suggest getting in touch with Turner Engineering the absolute best people to deal with in LR engines? Frida will probably have it on your doorstep by the time you’ve the phone down!

The answer is even on their website- that’s why they’re the best

Elring couldn't tell me that, and told me that it has 4 holes...🤷‍♂️

Suggests that Elring and Reinz might be exactly the same gasket in different packaging though...

I doubt Turner provide quite as fast a service to....VANCOUVER...lol
