There's a write up on the 2012 Defender in this months LRO, as well as the 2012 RRS, FFRR and Disco 4. Didn't have time to read it properly, but had a quick glance at it...
The DPF has been relocated, it's near the downpipe, and can be regenerated in about 10 mins at speeds above 20mph - apparently farmers have been testing them for 8 months and not had a problem. Also it mentions the new acoustic engine cover, other under bonnet gubbins -vac pump relocated, new design and routing for the coolant hoses, and that all the dashboard lights are now LED. There was a lot more mentioned, but was in a rush and already late so didn't have time to read the whole article. |

Well ... having done about 400 miles now I must admit that it seems to be more than okay .... More quiet and less characteristic than the Td5 or even the 2.4 .... but seems more lively and nippy .... However, I am still taking it a bit easy on the first 700-800 miles .... But so far I am not at all disappointed!!! Best Regards, Axel |

I have seen a few 2012s now, with the black canvas backs on 130s etc. Usually on transporters of course. 2011 110 USW

Having just covered over 100 miles in mine I would agree re being more lively and nippy - certainly more so than my old 300TDi and the heating system, now the weather has turned colder is brilliant!! |

Just a quick update, have just covered 500 miles, all is well apart from rain and mud getting into the rear foot wells seemingly from underneath the doors somewhere.
Frantic squeaking and rattling from the rear seats as well. The dealer has just called me to say, the rear doors had to be removed and re-aligned, and all the seats came out, then re-tightened all the mounts ect - all is ok, no squeaks or rattles. They thought they would take her out for a test drive to check all is good, the engineer noted a clunking, come grinding noise from somewhere under the vehicle. Back on the ramps and 40 mins later. they located a 'beam' their words not mine that hadn't been welded up correctly that seems to be moving! Dealer having to speak to Land Rover directly to see how to tackle the problem! Do Land Rover ever check anything prior to it leaving the factory? 2012 Defender 110 DCPU XS 2.2 Puma Orkney Grey ''I can resist everything except temptation. '' |

Makes you wonder. I had to call Land Rover assist out yesterday as the engine malfunction light came on. This was due to - 1. Airflow sensor multi plug not locked in. 2. Lower charge hose not correctly fitted. Haven't covered 200 miles yet. Otherwise everything fine! |

Regardless that would be going back and getting rejected if it was my vehicle. |

I did that with the last MY57 DCPU XS, owned it for nine months but it spent six at the dealers getting sorted. In the end I gave up, rejected it and they gave me a new D3 TDV6 SE fully loaded in its place.
Three years down the line, as much as the D3 was a great vehicle my heart was never in it, much prefer Defenders. So I am loathed to reject this one, I feel I must give them some leeway to sort out the probs, apart from that I am smitten and couldn't part with her 2012 Defender 110 DCPU XS 2.2 Puma Orkney Grey ''I can resist everything except temptation. Ok great news, Land Rover back, no squeaks, rattles or leaks. The receptionist obviously didn't get the right message, the only welding that was necessary was a small spot weld which had failed on one of the rear seats - hence the mouse squeaking noise.
Very happy, extremely quiet cab now. 2012 Defender 110 DCPU XS 2.2 Puma Orkney Grey ''I can resist everything except temptation. '' |

“Do Land Rover ever check anything prior to it leaving the factory?”
No.... What are they gonna do if they find anything wrong? Halt an assembly line? Have a team of electricians, welders, painters etc. on standby to fix any faults? They let the vehicles go out as is, the dealer can modify production errors or the customer can discover any faults for the dealer to fix; the dealer’s expenses have already been built into L-R’s retail price. Yes, I know some manufactures adopt the approach of “get it right before it reaches the dealer”, but Land Rover isn’t one of them. Peter |

Very true. Some dealers are better than others but the ethos is often to let the customer discover any faults and then rectify them on demand ....not before trying the "but they're all like that Sir" get out first. Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. bloody ridiculous. It took them 2 years to start putting the 2.4 together remotely properly. Now there's a new engine it seems they are on the learning curve again. I really thought the above problems had been ironed out by now.
I've often watched 'megafactories' on one of the discovery channels where they show you how Ferraris, Aston Martins etc are built and wished they'd feature the Defender factory but I think it would be too embarassing for LR cos it would be like The Chuckle Brothers ! |

How bloody true is that. The "but they're all like that sir" really gets up my nose and it is the first line they use. I am sick of hearing it |
