High level brake light
Hi All

On the Puma was the rear screen high level brake light standard or an optional extra?

pretty sure standard.
but also pretty sure that they're prone to failure. the conductive tape on the window is I believe prone to failure / open circuit and hence light doesn't work.
need a new window or 'heath robinson' fix Very Happy

or should that be Big Cry

As above standard, they seemed to appear on vehicles as standard fit from around 99/2000 if memory serves me right so assume regs change around then, however not sure that applied to commercial/vans so may depend if station wagon or hard top 🤔 2004 Defender 90 Td5 CSW

They became a type approval requirement for M1 vehicles and would as a result have been fitted to all station wagon variants from around the time mentioned above. I am not sure however if they also became standard on commercial (i.e., N1 variants) which had a rear door fitted, i.e., hardtop 90s and 110s.

They have never been a requirement on N1 type approved vehicles but continued to be fitted to the former M1 vehicles when all Defenders became N1 type approved.

The commercial pick-up models, namely 90 and 110 pickups, 110 double cabs, and 110 and 130 hicaps have never had them fitted.

If anyone can say with certainty whether commercial variants with rear doors had them fitted as standard it would usefully add to the forum's collective body of knowledge.

In the short period where the road tax was cheaper for a van or utility (2010 ish) The utility had the high level brake light, but as said pickups didn’t. But both had the lower road tax compared to the station wagon.

I suspect this was a build/parts list oddity rather than a conscious decision - it was probably cheaper to have one standard type of door to fit on both SW and USW vehicles than to have to manage the stock control of different doors.

More based on the regulations of the country it was sold in. My 2009 110 5dr, came with no high/3rd brake light. I added one to meet Canadian requirements. Not quite sure where mine was originally sold other than somewhere warm, dry, sandy, and LHD.

In the family have a 2009, ex utility 90, light goods vehicle, that apparently had the 3rd light, but was removed to rivet an aluminum plate behind the glass, guess for extra security. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Hmmm... Some interesting replies.

My 2007 Puma does not have a high level brake light. The glass is Land Rover branded and I did suspect that at some point it had been replaced. However I have seen a few Puma's without the 3rd brake light and am starting to think that as mine started its life as a hardtop that it never had one when it left the factory.

I'm thinking of replacing the rear screen as some of the heating elements are damaged. If I do I may as well fit one that will take a 3rd brake light. Has anyone replaced a rear screen themselves or is it a pain of a job?

In these parts, the rear 3rd brake light was an option and installed on vehicles whose owners wanted it and paid for it. Otherwise, you got the normal safari door glass with just the defogger.

Some other owners later wanted to install the 3rd brake light and had to replace the safari door glass with the one for use with the 3rd brake light and of course, had to buy the 3rd brake light and have them installed. Apparently the wiring is already present so easy enough to put together. Oh, you need the switch up front too. Thumbs Up No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy

Change the glass and fit something that has to make connections with the glass itself, and it blocks part of your rear view? Why? Just fit an LED strip 3rd brake light like this:

I fit mine above the door. Easy peasy.

The earlier commercial spec did not have one, late commercial spec came with one as standard. I have a 2007 and a late 2015 commercial spec Pumas and the later one although was the basic spec is not far off a County spec - it has vinyl seats but came with third rear brake light, electric windows, alpine stereo, tweeters / rear speakers, and the later steering wheel with padded centre.
