On the way to the farm during this long weekend we got a nice nail in the rear right tire. Was quite late in the night but we were already in the house. So we leave the car and went to sleep. In the next morning we take out the pedestal lift (included with the LR) and with the help of my son and my father in law we proceed to change the wheel. After lift the car we notice that something went wrong, the lift support was bend. Final result: Something like should be like that: Is now like that I Swear that I follow all the instructions to make the change (flat surface, no loadede, car with handbrake, the lift not inclined, etc) I believe that the lift are not assembled in the correct way. Can you check if the part of your lift labeled as 5 here is going up or down when is folded? I used mine on the old TD5 regularly and looking at the photos I would say LR stuffed up! The pipe should IMO (and looks like mine is) be welded at the front and rear of the cross member. It looks as if the weld is absent or failed at the rear and allowed the pipe to pivot. Having said that are you sure the lift was fully home into the receptor hole? There is a welded lug on the bottom of the pipe on the jack that should be hard agains the rear cross member. If you didnt insert this all the way in the maybe you were putting all the force at the rear of the x-member and thus tore the welds ... closer look at the pics does show some tears. Fix with big hammer and a touch of welds... be as good as new. Cheers Mark |

Hi Eduardo. I have only got a bottle jack type lift but in answer to your question the lift should fold upwards.Hope this helps Graham

I can assure that the lift was fully inserted in the hole up to the lug. Silverpig, my lift fold downwards that can be part of the problem. Well, Im already e-mailing to the dealers. Oh My. I can see a recall on the way. I wonder how many have not been welded. Serious H&S issue.

I just had a close look at mine and it appears exactly the same as yours. There are what look like a couple of spot welds on either side of the pipe to the outer face of the cross-member. I think I can see on your photo where those welds look like they've broken. 2007 Defender 110

My old jack folded down but I don't think thats the issue. Poor or incomplete welds especially along the bottom of the tube means all the force is applied in one spot crumpling the x-member . Why they didn't weld the face from the outside where its easier?... Might have to do that on mine. |

Thanks for all the info, will be very valuable if the things going bad. Yesterday I receive an e-mail from the dealers. (I sent to them an e-mail with the pictures and a explanation of the situation) They are looking the issue and will comeback.... I will keep you informed. Cheers! It is simple physics on what has happened- if the bar on the jack folded down and locked off, the weight would have been distributed 50/50 on the two attachement points on the cross meber, but as it folds the other way, all the weight has been put on one point making it crumble. I would say that the jack is at more fault than the cross member.

The jack is not at fault. They have been like this for years. If it is fully located, the hinge direction of the jack is irrelevent. This failure is have many before have said due to incomplete welding of the tube. i have not had this problem on my TD5 and have used the jack at the rear several times. Land Rovers are an addiction. Toyotas are for quitters.
