There has always been some there for the last 10 years or so, although when you drop down past the Carrefour to the island the gendarmes have mostly kept that clear for the past 3 or 4 years.
When we were travelling regularly before we moved here with the big Ifor box trailer, I always managed to judge the traffic and not let the wheels stop turning, on one occasion several ran after us I assume to try and jump on the back, I braked sharply and then went as fast as I could which seemed to upset their timing so didn't have a problem. Some friends stopped at the Carrefour for fuel in their Crafter van last year then pulled forward and parked so Carole could use the porta potty in the back - in the few seconds it took for Pete to unlock the side door a small lad jumped in and hid behind a coat hung on the back of the drivers seat, luckily Pete noticed as they were checking into the port and he ran off - terminal security said not to worry it happens all the time, I told Carole she's lucky he didn't sue for trauma after potentially witnessing her on the throne! Back up to Caen in a couple of weeks so thanks for the heads up! |

caught the 16.30 from Ouistreham to Portsmouth, day before yesterday - didn't see any migrants - but we always approach from the coast road D514. There was a big gendarme/douane presence at the port and a lady with a big dog had a peek in the back of my 110

I found one hiding in the back of my soft top 90. Absolutely scared the out of me when I looked in the back. Luckily some locals called the gendarmes whilst I told him not to run so they picked him up. That was catching the 11pm boat out of Caen.

We went out through Caen and back via St Malo last week and didn't see a single person who looked to be an asylum seeker, but we never stop outside of the port itself or within 15 miles or so if possible.
