"all Defenders come with a subwoofer, including those without the Meridian sound"
Not my 90 Commercial, just a plastic blanking plate. Obviously l could fit a subwoofer but there's no wiring in place for it either. To be honest l am surprised the audio system sounds as good as it does, with only the standard front door speakers (no rear speakers) and no subwoofer. l assume there's an output on the amplifier and it could be connected with a made-up harness. Unless you could choose the sound of a Stuka or Tie Fighter that would be the first thing I’d delete. WARNING. This post may contain sarcasm. |

VW and other manufacturers do it. Our VW Up GTi had what they called a "Soundaktor" which gave fake engine noise when you accelerated.
There was a similar conversation on the VW forum. Some hated it and disconnected the "Soundaktor" speaker. |

Well that must be only for the Commercial models. The shop manual I have doesn't cover anything on the Commercial variants. 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟏𝟎 𝐒 𝐏𝟑𝟎𝟎 (Pangea Green over Acorn/Lunar) 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐒 (Dolomite Silver over Black/Bordeaux Red) 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟕 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐇𝐒𝐄 𝐋𝐮𝐱𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐢𝟔 (Aintree Green over Vintage Tan/Ebony) - Gone 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟏 𝐋𝐑𝟒 𝐇𝐒𝐄 𝟓.𝟎 (Ipanema Sand over Almond/Arabica) - Gone |

i wouldn't pay that much its the same unit used on Discovery 5 and they go for about £20 on the bay. Noise cancellation isn't just fake engine noise its opposing sound waves to cancel out road noise etc

No, that isn't the amplifier. The amp is located underneath the driver's side rear cargo panel. Click image to enlarge Also, looks like there are five connectors for the amp. They all have it; the P400 is the worst offender IMO. Sounds like an I6 from a video game. 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟏𝟎 𝐒 𝐏𝟑𝟎𝟎 (Pangea Green over Acorn/Lunar) 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐒 (Dolomite Silver over Black/Bordeaux Red) 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟕 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐇𝐒𝐄 𝐋𝐮𝐱𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐢𝟔 (Aintree Green over Vintage Tan/Ebony) - Gone 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟏 𝐋𝐑𝟒 𝐇𝐒𝐄 𝟓.𝟎 (Ipanema Sand over Almond/Arabica) - Gone |

Active Noise Cancellation is disabled on all Defenders, as they don't have the microphones for the ANC system. Currently this feature is only in the Range Rovers. 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟏𝟎 𝐒 𝐏𝟑𝟎𝟎 (Pangea Green over Acorn/Lunar) 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐒 (Dolomite Silver over Black/Bordeaux Red) 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟕 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐇𝐒𝐄 𝐋𝐮𝐱𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐢𝟔 (Aintree Green over Vintage Tan/Ebony) - Gone 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟏 𝐋𝐑𝟒 𝐇𝐒𝐄 𝟓.𝟎 (Ipanema Sand over Almond/Arabica) - Gone |

I don't know why everyone gets so excited about the engine sound "enhancement". Porsche, Ferrari and the rest spend a significant amount of time and money engineering the sound of their cars, both intake and exhaust. I have not checked lately, but I can easily imagine that the SUVs from those manufacturers have "enhanced" sound as well.
As a matter of fact, I spent some time listening to various friend's cars before building the exhaust for my modified Camaro at the age of 19 and, come to think of it, purchased an IMSA (INSA? I think they were also sold as Monza) exhaust for my V6 Capri at the age of 16 after hearing one on a friend's Capri. (I just dated myself, didn't I?) Emotions sell cars, and the noise is a a part of those emotions. Yes, you could call it cheating, but at the end of the day, who really cares? At least it's not adding any weight RRC 2Dr, RRC 4Dr, P38, and 2 L322s, 2 FL1s and a L663 on the way |

I have a Porsche Macan S and there is no fake engine noise played through the speakers. In the 981 and 982 Boxster/Caymans and 991 and 992 911s have what Porsche calls a "Sound Symposer," which is a tube that goes from the intake to a port in the back of the passenger compartment to amplify intake noise. It isn't fake, it is the sound of the actual engine, but sent through a tube and amplified in the cabin. It works incredibly well and it is the reason why modern turbocharged 911s don't sound turbocharged from the inside. 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟏𝟎 𝐒 𝐏𝟑𝟎𝟎 (Pangea Green over Acorn/Lunar) 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐒 (Dolomite Silver over Black/Bordeaux Red) 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟕 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐇𝐒𝐄 𝐋𝐮𝐱𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐢𝟔 (Aintree Green over Vintage Tan/Ebony) - Gone 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟏 𝐋𝐑𝟒 𝐇𝐒𝐄 𝟓.𝟎 (Ipanema Sand over Almond/Arabica) - Gone |
