Interesting, So someone somehow got the car in that position to make these pictures or they lifted the pictures from an old ad (more likely)?
Its sad, but you can protect yourself from these scams by simply assuming everything is a scam and acting accordingly. Sadly with AI and all we might soon be at a point ever NOTHING you see on-line can be trusted, news, reviews, etc. The only truth is the what you can touch - like the flat earth society. Already now I look at text and think, 'was that written by an AI bot?', who is trying to manipulate me? Maybe this response is not real either and I am just a computer in Russia causing mass confusion on Defender2.net |

Sadly ebay (and I’m sure other marketplaces) are full of these scam adverts. Frequently obvious, lack of feedback, selling several vehicles (typically Defenders, caravans, motorhomes and prestige saloons) for significantly less than market price, but sadly people still get duped by them.
I’m sure it won’t be long before the scammers change the MO and more will get duped. If the seller won’t let you see it before you put anything down on it, it should ring alarm bells 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone 2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone 2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW |

Yes lifted the images from Auto Trader... it was actually a policeman that was selling it originally
 He reported it also. |

I'm new to the world of Defenders and almost fell for this exact advert. Thought it was a really good price for spec etc but excitement gets in the way of logic
Seller was hard to communicate with but didn't ask for any money....yet. Worrying that its still on Ebay after being reported. Tempted to stay interested just to waste as much of his/her time as possible. Thanks for highlighting and saving me a load of hassle. |

Sometimes it not new accounts with no feedback, but real accounts that have been hacked, which makes it look more legitimate.
As my website scrapes all the Defender eBay adverts, I've spent a lot of time trying to filter out the scams. You can see a whole bunch of adverts being posted in the same minute across multiple eBay usernames. The last photo also often shows a Gmail address. From a user's perspective, the key marker is if the price seems too good to be true - usually under £10k for a clean vehicle. It's hard if you're not experienced. I very nearly fell for a crypto scam when I was dabbling with it a few years ago because I wasn't experienced, and I'm typically quite rational. Been on and off EBay for about a year, despite being reported by the policeman sellers, whose original advert it was. I'm afraid I just wouldn,t send anybody over £500 without seeing the vehicle first and the seller in person. Just the point that you should never buy a Defender unseen, despite videos etc. You really need to have a good poke about with somebody who has knowledge. Four of my clients this year have bought unseen and are into new rear this, bulkheads, rear spreaders the list goes on... I think the younger more inexperienced guys are easily fooled sadly. Too trusting... I help with advice where I can but when you buy privately there is not a lot you can do. Caveat Emptor! Condition is everything on a Defender, pay 3k plus more for a nice one and it will save a lot of cost and hassle in the future. Bide your time, look at a few... oh and get them treated by me 🤣😉 |

It’s not just looking to buy.
I’ve been trying to sell a mountain bike for the last few weeks. Those that have messaged me with an offer so far have zero feedbacks and when I tell them it’s PayPal only to protect both parties I never hear from them again. Our local post office had a run recently on forged notes, so my guess is that junkies are trying to money launder…. |

I read yesterday elsewhere that buyers on Paypal can request their money back and as the seller, you can't prevent it?
I'm presuming that leads to you 'selling' your vehicle /bike etc and saying goodbye to it only to find hours later, Paypal have returned the money to the person who now owns your property.  1984 90 V8 puma want to be.Last edited by V8Simon on 5th Sep 2024 9:46am. Edited 1 time in total |

Here in France, tried to buy a car for Euro 8k, thinking easy whip out the cash: Not so easy, you need to order that from a bank then wait a while before you can pick it up.
All this is pushing you to go to dealers which provide a 'service' we did not need before: being able to transfer money. Dissapointing |
