Did you change the switch with a genuine Lucas one? 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Which switch did you change, the off-s&t-hs&t switch or the dip/flash/indicate switch?

I had an aftermarket switch from Paddock spares it was the side lights and dipped beam switch. The flash main beam works.

I was thinking If I put a wire in the live on the connector and put it into the feed for the headlight. will that tell me if it is the switch

99 times out of 100.on Defenders it is one or other of the two switches. I suggest you change the other one.

^^^^ This.

When I had problems I thought it might be the headlight switch, replaced it and still the same, so replaced the stalk also and then stat solved it.
I believe it was the stalk and its contacts that was at fault as the circuits for the light switch go through it if I remember rightly.

Which is surprising as you’d tend to think its main beam permanent of main beam flash only, but it isn’t there is the dipped as well. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

I have ordered the other switch. but in the meantime I was wandering if it could be the relay. But I don't know where it is. Can anyone help please

I have just had same issue on 2008 90. Ordered both switches, no difference Had no headlamps just main beam on pulled back stalk.
My solution by luck was open fuse box under steering column to see if I could see the relay, couldn’t work out which it was so gave them all a good wiggle and push in Problem solved all lights up and working again!

Circuit logic is this:

The high beam flash (pulling back the stalk) is directly powered from the battery, hence it'll work even with ignition off. If that works, obviously high beam lamps and wiring are ok.

High and low beam are powered via the (short) light switch, ignition-powered relay, long stalk/switch. So if both high and low beam aren't working it's most likely one of the two switches or the relay (or a fuse). If only high beam is working, it's the long stalk's low-beam contact and vice versa, i.e. the short light switch is ok.

From MY 2012 IIRC a relay was added to avoid premature frying of the light switch's contacts (R117). The high beam switch has to bear the full current nevertheless.

(Fuse numbers are different for earlier MYs but circuit is the same.)

I changed the relay and worked great but after just 10 minutes the relay went again. so shorted it out for the MOT but any ideas why it would go again or is it ok to use with a short in.
