A/C not cooling, what DIY checks to do?
Hi,

The underdash aircon is not blowing cold air. What checks can I undertake as a simple DIY'er to diagnose and hopefully fix the issue? With DIY I mean I do not have the equipment eg to do a pressure test or measure the amount of gas in the system etc.

The cabin fan blows just fine (I can only run it at full blast since the resistor blew last year) but the air doesn't turn cold like it used to. I have a multimeter and the usual tools like screwdrivers, pliers and wrenches at my disposal and am not shy to take things apart if putting them back together again isn't too complicated. But where to start? Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

Call an expert

Not for a Defender, but I had a mobile air-con specialist out to the house, not expensive at £65 for a pressure test and re-gas

Most systems need re gassing every 2-3 years as they slowly leak, especially if you don’t run the A/C all the time. A specialist will have the kit which regasses and relubricates the system and checks for significant pressure loss.
Well worth leaving it to the experts.

I think it needs re-gassing as mentioned, it’s a common job that needs doing but not DIY.

Not very expensive, places like Halfords do it. (Doubt it will be more than £80).

I’d avoid LR they’ll find a way of making the job £1000. Snigger ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

it's a specialist job.

they will pressure test the system.

sniff test for leaks?

if it holds gas then they can regas and or oil if need and also add a sealant to stop small leaks

Is the condenser still intact or have all the fins fallen off like many?
