Same thing happened to me last week when we set off for Spain. We didn't even make it as far as the tunnel. From my understanding it is likely to be the master or slave cylinder.

Mortifying isn’t it! At least the cylinders may be an easier fix than the clutch itself?
What did you end up doing? Did you manage to continue on your trip? Thanks for that link! That’s really handy. Will see what these guys see and then look at options. |

The slave cylinder on a Puma is as big of a job as replacing the clutch. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Because it happened on a Sat afternoon (no chance of a garage) and we were about 3 hours from home we elected to abandoned the trip. Mine is going in for new master, slave/release bearing, clutch and LOF adapter shaft on Monday. I don't actually know what's failed yet, but everyone I've spoken to has said it likely the master or slave. Having everything else done just for piece of mind due to age?
Does your clutch pedal feel normal? Mine went soft and then stuck to the floor. Slave cylinder is in the middle of the clutch in the bell housing, so not a quick job. Master is pretty straight forward I'm told. Trying for Spain again in a couple of weeks. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

What a PITA having to abandon the trip. Sorry to hear that.
Clutch feels like normal. So still got some weight to it. Didn’t notice a rattle or anything on the clutch when idling (I always keep an ear out for that). |

If it’s the slave cylinder, unfortunately- you may as well do the clutch and everything while you are in there. Cheaper to do it all together now than taking the box off again in the future.
Go for the LOF Clutch bundle kit and one piece output shaft. You get the better 2.2 TDCi slave cylinder in the clutch bundle kit also. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS. |

In a pinch you can drive a car with a failed (not disengaging) clutch. You have to start the car in 1st gear and work your way through the gears rev matching etc. Pain but on a motorway you can get pretty far without using the clutch.
The puma is in many ways a nicer defender especially for family vacations, but the Td5 is in many ways simpler, such as an external slave cylinder. |

Wait, on the Puma you have to remove the gearbox to change the slave cylinder?🤷♂️🤷♂️ who thought that was a good design? And I though changing the one on the TD5 was awkward because the exhaust is a bit in the way.

majority of modern designs have a hydraulic concentric bearing so yes it's required to be internal to the gearbox........

Gutted for you!
I had similar issue a couple of years ago - no symptoms and then suddenly not able to change gear with engine running. If I remember correctly it was the spigot bearing that had failed. I had a new clutch fitted and unfortunately a new gearbox too as the spigot bearing had trashed the input shaft. Fingers crossed you won't need a gearbox! |

Sorry you had to go as far as replacing the gearbox!! I really hope that’s not the case for us!!
The car has got to be left in France as there’s an issue getting a part, but honestly the work experience. The gearbox is out already so hopefully no further bad news other than the clutch. |

The Landy is back on home soil!
Original repair time estimate was four days. Four WEEKS later we went and picked her up. Clutch works, so that’s good news at least. Not so good is that the transfer box now leaks and it’s picked up some electrical gremlins while in the French garages care! Now it’s home I’m going to try and clean it up and see if I can work out what’s happening. |
