I would tend to lean towards Turbo, if it’s very high mileage it probably is worth changing it anyway and will drive better anyway.

I’ve had a few people/mechanics suggest this..

I just wonder about doing a compression and leak down test to determine if it’s rings or not… Cheers.....

I have done a few compression tests on 2.4 and 2.2 Defenders but always with a cold engine. I am not sure if it is a valid test though. Puma 110" SW

How much oily gunk is in the pipework between turbo and intercooler?

I'm yet to remove but I assume it will be oily?
The section from where the breather hose intake is to the Turbo looks ok for its age. Its not clean but not clogged up either

I want to gain easier access to remove the IC so I was wondering if anyone can tell me if there are captive nuts on inside of the guard holding these bolts in place?

Do u know if they are a captive nut as in if u remove the bolt that the nut doesn’t drop down into the inner guard? Cheers.....

I seem to remember that they are captive, go easy undoing them because you never know.
I think they are weld nuts behind there so fairly secure from spinning though, you shouldn’t have any issues. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

My 2011 D110 was consuming oil before as well and it was definitely the turbo. Don't get me wrong, it still drove great, it just needed quite a bit of top off with the engine oil and the turbo whine was louder than usual.

After the turbo was replaced, drove much better, more quiet, and didn't need top offs anymore with the engine oil.

While you're at it, have the intercooler cleaned out. Mine had A LOT of oil in it when we did this. Clean out the turbo hoses as well.

I hope this helps. Thumbs Up

The MAP sensor often gets caked as well, that doesn’t help. Thumbs Up
The fixing for that is 3NM if anyone should want to do that and brake cleaner spray or MAF cleaner will do that, don’t touch or disturb the element.

Again, something rarely done with a service just left until failiure. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

I would rather use contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Puma 110" SW
