Hey All... my local LR mechanic has seen a couple of Turbo failures whereby the Turbo lets oil past and it gets trapped in the IC and builds up to the point where the engine then runs away on Engine Oil & destroys the engine.
I'm in a situation where my 2.4 is using starting to use Engine oil (about 1ltr/4>5k kms) and from what I can see there is no Blue smoke coming out the exhaust. When I take the engine oil filler cap off while engine it running I notice that the cap will not sit there but the local LR mechanic did mention that these engines do breath heavily and don't read too much into it. He also said that these 2.4's don't usually burn oil either. I've checked my Air Intake for dust ingress and it's all good... anyone with ideas/experiences as to what it might be as to why I've started to use engine oil (engine has 231,000kms on it)? The vehicle has been remapped and performs and runs perfectly otherwise but there is a bit of blow by which may or may not be normal?? thanks in advance... Cheers..... Stupid question but is the sump oil level rising?
If its not leaking on the floor, blowing out of the exhaust or finding its way into the sump it must be in the intercooler and pipework? Strip the intercooler and wash it out, if there is oil a new or recon turbo is cheap insurance. Good luck Keith |

No... sump level is not increasing.
The vehicle has been performing faultlessly up until now & I've always changed the oil every 7500kms and use full Syn oils as well. I've just come back from a desert trip here in Australia and it used about a 1ltr of oil in the 6000km trip. I use a 5w30 full syn oil but have been told to try a slightly thicker grade of oil (5w40). Not sure if this will do much though... Cheers..... All i can say is that the oil consumption is rather low. You could try a product like https://toralin.com/toralin-compression-repair.html and see if it gets better. If not, a change to 10W-40 might help.

Cheers for that...
Just trying to work out if the oil usage is from a worn turbo or worn engine... Cheers..... Rob 1995 Defender Tdi 110Wgn 1996 LR Discovery Tdi300 (A) 2009 Defender PUMA 110Wgn My TRPS: Rob's WikiLoc Trips |

One problem that also leads to oil consumption are worn copper seals of the injectors. Inspect them carefully or have them done immediately. Check the breather pipe (crankase vent).

I would have thought that if the Injector Seals were leaking that this would lead to the oil becoming quite contaminated? Not actually burn oil. The engine compression would force blowby up past the Injector contaminating the engine oil...? I know from past owing a 2010 Toyota Prado 3ltr TD that this was an issue with them where by it got that bad that if u weren't careful that your oil would turn to sludge and block the oil pickup and thus destroy the engine. I'll run this past my local LR Mechanic... thanks... Cheers..... Rob 1995 Defender Tdi 110Wgn 1996 LR Discovery Tdi300 (A) 2009 Defender PUMA 110Wgn My TRPS: Rob's WikiLoc Trips |

The leak there causes leaking oil/exhaust from the crankcase to the turbo, so check these hoses. Afaik no contamination of the oil as an indicator -- sooner or later for sure.

IIRC a quick check for diesel contamination of sump oil is to put a drop of oil off the dipstick onto a sheet of white paper, if it creates a clear 'halo' around the oil, this is a possible sign of contamination.

Guys...
Here's a video clip showing you the amount of blowby that's coming out of my 2010 2.4 Tdci Defender 110... From the conversations I've had, it looks like I may be up for a new Turbo... but the only thing is that the car is running/driving fine (other than oil usage). Does this amount of blowby normal or abnormal? My 2010 Defender PUMA 2.4ltr Tdci Blowby @ 232,000kms[/url] comments? Cheers..... I would tend to lean towards Turbo, if it’s very high mileage it probably is worth changing it anyway and will drive better with improved power and MPG.
Hopefully in the process stop and vastly reduce the oil consumption. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ Last edited by custom90 on 2nd Aug 2024 7:39am. Edited 2 times in total |

Unsure about injector seals as I believe they are still the original ones and the car has done 232,000kms Cheers..... Rob 1995 Defender Tdi 110Wgn 1996 LR Discovery Tdi300 (A) 2009 Defender PUMA 110Wgn My TRPS: Rob's WikiLoc Trips |
