Yes that's what Nige told me, but surely synthetic would be better? Do you know why it should be mineral?

It's that I have quite a few bottles of the Motul oil, so didn't really want to but something different.

ATB maufacturers do not recommend synthetic oil due to its "slipperiness" which affects the work principle of these diffs. I have not seen any test regarding this, but I just follows their recommendiation so I use reputable mineral oil based 80W-90 GL5 rated. Puma 110" SW

Always GL4 in gearbox, GL4/5 transfer box, GL5 diffs.
Thats what I go by anyway, mineral EP90 is thick compared to fully synth. Uses more fuel, not so sure mineral is so good with seas either such as the pinion oil seal. Personally I would not be overly worried, just so long as GL4 is used in gearbox of which that’s a different topic anyway. There is other factors such as anti foaming agents and things like that. I used to use mineral but now use fully synthetic, better properties in the cold as well. Mineral being thicker perhaps has a little more protection, but when you will be paying for that in fuel all the time by that loss of MPG you’ve probably bought a coupe of diffs anyway. Perhaps worth checking the materials the lockers are made with hence the bronze component issues, I don’t think standard diffs have any bronze components but are hypoid gears etc. I’m not an expert though, don’t profess to be but I wouldn’t go back to mineral personally but that’s just me. OK having taken all of the above into consideration and doing a lot reading I think I will be going for the Castrol TRANSMAX Axle EPX 80W-90, which is a mineral oil GL5.

I think that is one of the strengths of the old Defender. It is a capable vehicle but it can be a platform to add on additional items to make even more so if you require it.

Nige from Xcess4x4 who built my diffs and works closely with Ashcroft and uses these diffs in his car recommended mineral EP90 GL4/GL5. So have purchased this type.
