Intermittent Limp Mode and Non-Responsive Accelerator - Need
Hi everyone,

I recently bought a defender 2.4 2007 with 255k on the odometer. The engine runs well, but before I started using it regularly, I decided to do some preventative maintenance. I've replaced all the fluids, installed a new battery, a new V-belt, a new belt tensioner, and swapped out the MAP and MAF sensors.

However, I've been experiencing a recurring issue: occasionally, the engine goes into Limp mode. Sometimes the accelerator becomes completely unresponsive. I can press the pedal all the way down, but nothing happens. I can still move the car to a safe spot while idling, but it won't go any faster.

When I turn the engine off and try to restart it, it cranks but won't start. There's no check-engine light. I have a ScanGauge2, and it's showing two error codes: P2562 and P0642. Even after clearing these codes, the car still won't start. However, if I press down the accelerator pedal, I can get it to start again.

I've searched the forums and found that these error codes could indicate issues with the MAF and MAP sensors, but I've already replaced both.

Does anyone have any other ideas on what could be causing this issue before I take it to the garage?

Are there any changes to the temperature-needle or tank gauge in the instrument cluster when this happens?

No, everything in the cluster stays the same.

I've seen this post. As I mentioned, I have a brand new Bosch MAP sensor, so I assume the sensor is fine. I haven't checked the wiring or plug yet.

Ah, I see. I was fixated on the MAP sensor as the solution, but the error code affects three sensors. I'll test the EGR. It does click properly when I turn off the car, as I can hear the cleaning procedure. Thanks for your response.

Okay guys, I've made some progress. Unfortunately, the problem isn't solved yet. Sometimes I can drive 1000 km without any issues, and other times the problem comes back suddenly. I notice that if I press the gas pedal a few times, the car struggles to start and keep running. After a few attempts, it starts working fine and I can drive long distances without any problems again.

Recently, I went to a garage to have the car checked. They couldn't find the issue and noted the following codes on the invoice: U0100, P037D, P2363, P167B, P0642, P1103, P040, U3000, P0234, P1402, and P0100. They mentioned a possible potentiometer throttle pedal malfunction, but it is not reproducible at the moment.

I'm now 500 euros poorer, but nothing has changed with the car. I'm not sure where to look next...

I always thought that you should neither pump nor touch the accelerator pedal either before or when starting the engine, just depress the clutch and turn the key. 2012 90SW - 2.2TDCI

Mine did this for sometime until I changed the VCV on the pump, pig of a job as you need small hands to get to it. Been perfect since. 2008 Defender 110 XS CSW

Apart from noting faults, did they actually do anything?

I'm not sure that this counts as "progress". Big Cry

Have you done as Martin has suggested (twice now) above? Have you tried replacing the throttle pedal assembly?
