Remote Phob range
Hi,

What is the remote phobs distance to lock/unlock our defenders (TD5). Currently I need to stand litteraly next to the driver seat to unlock the car. I'm not sure if this is due low battery or if the system is just special ... Td5 110 Station

The fob on my Td5 is terrible. Sometimes the range is OK, sometimes it won’t unlock unless I’m right by the vehicle. It also varies depending whether I’m in front, behind, to the right, or to the left.

The Puma fob/receiver is vastly better. Charlie

Yup,
Same here, I have to be standing next to the drivers door to unlock mine
I did see a post a few years ago regarding extending then c/l antenna to help improve the range My confidence has been writing cheques that my abilities can't cash for years.

Interesting that they are so different, since electronically they are identical. I guess it must be down to the aerial positioning and design.

The Puma aerial implementation changed during production from a short wire hanging down from the 10AS to a slightly longer one draped randomly behind the dash towards the centre console. I am not aware that there is any significant difference in performance.

I, in common with many other owners, extended my dangly one and ran it up the O/S A pillar beside the screen. This generally marginally extends the range and means that in places which are electromagnetically quiet I can unlock from perhaps 20 feet away and, in most environments, usually I can unlock standing by any door. In EM-noisy areas it is sometimes necessary to be within a couple of feet of the A-post and even than can take several presses of the button.

Personally I wouldn't want any greater range that this, it simply increases the likelihood of an unintentional unlock and thereby the vulnerability of the vehicle.

I find that you need to be very close to the vehicle for the fob to work, as in a few feet, replacing the battery helps a bit but not that much in my experience.

However, as blackwolf says, the poor range does prevent accidental unlocking so thats a positive outlook on it, bloody annoying if the alarm is triggered by a spider or something in the middle night though!

This post has prompted me to replace my fob battery soon! 2004 Defender 90 Td5 CSW

I’ve not found any difference between Tdci, and Td5 range. Both were increased a bit with an antenna extension, both get worse, as the battery in the fob deteriorates, especially with frequent use.

Key fob has much lower radio power compared to a mobile phone. In car receiver is not the best design (= it was cheap), sensivivity is moderate but much bigger limitation is receiver "imunity" to signals from other radio users. I have seen lot of places, where car remotes just does not work, mostly there were some othe radio transmitters, from mobile phone base stations to crane remote controll. In some cases, we had to pull the car away, before it was starting again. I was remowing radio controll neede tof IMO on few Disco2 and Defender used friends for field repairs of radio tramsmitter tower and associated equipment. Before this, it.was.common for them, that they drove on the hill nex to the radio tower, but was not able to start the car there, and had to use EKA code procedure. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Hi

In my Puma the antenna wire (orange) has been run up the drives side A pillar behind the plastic cover. I can lock/unlock from around 20 metres.

Definitely worth extending the 10AS aerial (10 min job maximum) and fresh fob battery.
As everyone has said- Short orange/slate wire behind the drivers lower dash speaker.
Crimp/ or better solder on a long extension and run it up the windscreen behind the plastic A pillar trim, and into the headliner.
Mine runs about a metre back from the A-pillar back past the interior light and a bit further.

I can unlock/lock mine from 40 meters away, and it’s parked inside a metal roofed barn.

The old pointing the fob at the side of your head extents the range a bit.
