Oily intercooler hose
As always you have a series of events that you connect in your mind but not always the case, or is it…

The Defender has been running great. I changed the injectors and more recently the glow plugs, carefully Thumbs Up

Miles clocked up and no issues at all. Two days ago on acceleration it stalled. No issues, restarted and all good. Few days later, the same.

Stuck in heavy traffic today for ages. Got to work. On the way home pop sound low power and whooshing noise. Managed to limp home 30 miles and popped bonnet to find a little oil spray around offside in front of airbox. At this point I noticed the intercooler hose had come off and what is probably a small amount of oil from the turbo charger has been sucked around by induction / air flow / fan etc causing the mess. I’ve reconnected the hose and cleared P0299 (turbo under boost) I assume caused by the hose coming off.

Engine idles ok albeit seems a little grumpy. Will take for a run. My main questions are

1) can a mechanical fault cause to the hose coming off due to pressures (standard settings)
2) is it inevitable that with a turbo with 50k on it you will get a bit of oil seepage or is it a definite no and should be bone dry up to point of failure?

Has the hose split?

It's unlikely a mechanical failure will cause a hose to come off unless there is a serious obstruction.

All.other hoses ok, not delaminating internally?

2. I wouldn't be suprised to see oil there. Depends on turbo condition. You wouldn't want alot of oil there.

If its not showing on dipstick as oil been used in wouldn't worry. Cheers

Ideal. No obvious drop in oil level, silicone hose without any splits.

I’ll leave well alone now for a few days and see how it goes👍🏻

A lot of oily gunk enters the induction system from the breather unless you have fitted a Provent or similar, so the oil may not be from the turbo.

My induction hoses have been much cleaner since I fitted the Provent.

I had rigged up a catch tank but initially running it without tank baffling so might pack it etc. Taking the hose off when running there’s not a lot of oily vapour but I suppose it’s hard to see and doesn’t have the vacuum effect on it when I’ve pulled the hose off to look. Good shout, I hadn’t considered that as the source though 2010 2.4 TDCI Puma Defender 90
