Q: is it possible to get the MT82 gearbox out completely?
Every year before the summer holyday the same story...

Maintenance and fix gearbox isues before we are able to go on holyday.

I have during my ownership 4x changed the transferbox and 2x the clutchplate, but never took out the gearbox itsself (only put backwards for the clutchplate).

As on the last trip i had problems with noices above 80k in 5th and 6th gear, therefore I like to swop the gearbox to be sure (gearbox 270.000km covered)


I have a brand new (not refurmished) strengthend transferbox and 25k km gearbox waiting that i like to swap with what is in now.

2x I had oil leaks out of the transferbox. I could not find the reason, but think there was a bolt missing on not fitted corectly (to mate on the gearbox).

Questions:

- Is it possible to change gearbox/transferbox as a whole?

- I had clearence isues with the DPF when i tried to change the clutchplate. I didnt get it out. What is the best way to do this?

it is possible to remove both at once considering you have the proper equipment and skills. Not recommended though.

If it is done with the truck on the ground with a crane “inside” the cabine, I do not think removing both together is a problem. But why not unbolt and remove them seperately? I have only done it once and it just seemed easier to handle them one at a time.

It's a problem at ground level because the assembly is too bulky to fit under the chassis. It's easier and safer to remove the transfer box first then the gearbox. If you have a lift you can remove them as a unit but unless bonkers you'll want to split them to inspect the adaptor shaft coupling anyway.

Ok, i did not account for the raised height of my truck. But anyway I would recommend doing them one at a time.

On Discovery 2 I have placed cca 20 cm high woodem blocks under all 4 wheels, than crane inside the cab and lower gearbox+transferbox together on a sheet of metal, to slide it out. Easy, just 2 people needed - first under the car and second to controll the crane. With car lift it is much easier now. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Did this at -20°C. Wasn't that bad really. You'll need a good transmission jack for sure.
