Unused space in RH wing (RHD vehicle)
I removed the trim panel from the RH wing of my 300TDI Defender (where heater inlet would be on LHD vehicle) and was surprised how much of a void is in there. Probably enough to allow storage of wheel changing tools and a tow strop.

With a hinged lid the some items could be removed with the bonnet closed.

Have any of you made such a modification?

The challenge really is installing panels to stop the items escaping into the engine area followed by preventing them from rattling around.

There's significantly more accessible volume than that tiny trapezoidal box affords access to, I'd suggest in the region of 30 litres useable void as far forward as the back of the headlamp and aft to the footwell.


On the LHS there's the volume from the heater air inlet duct to behind the headlamp but it's more suited to items like an air compressor which one reply mentioned.

As to LHD vehicle I suspect it's a mirror image: same volume different side.

I'll do some measuring later. I think a 25mm steel mesh might make a good seperator from the engine bay and allow warm air to circulate hopefully drying things off when the weather is fair.

I used that space to mount an auxiliary fuse and relay box for the lights at the front of the car. It looks after the headlight relay loom and auxiliary driving lights. Its a good place to get a live feed direct from the alternator and there is some spare capacity in there for other things in the future. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Any links to the cheaper ones? Looked on eBay but couldn’t get any hits for Defender locker/wing storage etc. Thanks.

Looking slightly more closely to the result of my quick Google earlier, it appears that the cheaper ones are for LHD vehicles. I cannot immediately find any for RHD.

Watching with interest Smile Been contemplating this for years. One question was how to get a container in there without removing the wing. I like the steel mesh idea! Then, if needed, stuff a rugged bag inside.

Next question was how to make a lid. I don't like the naka type ones (gmb-mount does one, too). Thought about just reusing the original cover, but with magnets. Would it stick on a corrugated road?

This is "Willy the Defender". The owner removes one screw and the lid swivels around another screw to open. The other screws are just the heads, glued in Smile

Maximum depth at each end is 250mm
Minimum is ab out 120mm by the top of the arch.
Useable length is 750mm measuring the curved flange inside the wing from by the radiator to approx centreline of the brake servo.

Plan is to secure the mesh to the return flange on the top face to which the header tank and fuel filter are secured thence to the inner wing by P clips and pop rivets.

I'll use some mesh with wire around 18 to 14SWG (1.2 to 2mm) diameter.

The jack can go on a bracket by the footwell end which will also carry it's handle and the wheel brace.
I think the rest of the volume can hold the tool roll and spares, prbably secured by some footman loops to stop any jiggling denting the outer wing skin.
