Now the decision has been made to sell the Puma and keep the 200 I have been gathering parts ready for it's spruce-up.
Replacement bonnet. I quite like the cargo rails that are on the current one but it looks cleaner without so I have a good replacement with no chequer plate and the sound-proofing intact. Station wagon sides. The solid sides are OK but I prefer windows. Whilst I had them loose I took the opportunity to tint the glass was well. Internal Mantec window grilles New side storage bins (to go over the tub arches) The high level shelf from the puma will be coming over Really good set of Puma front doors - elec windows and central locking Puma rear door, with c/l and high level brake light. I can also fit my existing table to this. And I will sell the new galv one I have in the garage waiting to be fitted. Replacement wing top for the NS wing which is currently full of filler Replacement steering column switches New (to me) cubby box Diesel heater Overdrive unit (Roamerdrive) Still to procure: Heater locker Refurb parts for the wiper mech / motor. Mechanically it is all good, still starts and runs like a dream. Noisy though. And lots of rattles but it looks like that is as a result of some slapdash reassembly when the chassis and bulkhead were replaced. I found out yesterday that the top f the seatbox only has 4 bolts in it right now The plan is to install the overdrive first, then sort out the rattles, then the steering column switches, wiper stuff and install the heater. The doors and side panels may need to wait as I would like to paint them before I fit them and it is a bit cold and wet for painting right now. I'll be doing a brush / roller paint job with either coach enamel or CombiColour in a satin finish. As for the colour, I am torn between Sandglow yellow and Tangiers Orange (or similar, perhaps RAL 2004 as I did on my 90). Decisions, decisions. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

Well, I bought orange paint and a litre of Sandglow to see how it looked and ended up going with Keswick Green . Satin coach enamel from Paintman. So it will be all satin - green with black roof, hinges and trim. The wolf wheels will be body coloured and painted with fine texture raptor, tinted with the coach enamel to match the colour.
This is the general gist: The weather is not quite here yet for painting but I have made a start: stripped, sanded and first coat on the rear door (now sanded and ready for next coat); first coat on the bonnet, sides prepped as are the wheels. Still a bit chilly out so having to use the kitchen for painting, which clearly goes down well with the boss. Have to wait until she has gone to bed and then get up early to clear up
Click image to enlarge Bonnet, side panels and rear door now done. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I had some spare glass from a long gone defender so I decided to experiment with DIY tinting. Bought the kit on ebay. It came out well. I have done the back window and quarterlight, side panel windows and now the second row doors. Click image to enlarge I swapped the optimill hinges on my other 110 for the new ones I had painted and intended for use on this one. Cleaning up ready to be stored for a few weeks before I can finish painting the doors and look to fit. Click image to enlarge While I work on the bits off the car some mechanical jobs to be attended to. Replacement front diff, front prop UJ and oil seal on the Salisbury axle at the rear. Plan to do those in the next week or so. |

More painting. Front doors were completely stripped, including all locks and window channels. No strictly necessary but even if it is a roller paint job I still want it to be well prepared and last for a while so the extra 30 mins per door seemed worth it.
I treated myself to new OE water shedders and later (2011 on) style bottom door seals. That plus a good internal coating with waxoyl should keep them going for a good few years. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

Bit of a delay before it goes to the garage to have diff bearings etc attended to so I thought I'd kill a bit of time sanding the panels on the car.
Alas the repaint the PO did was very sh!te . Not much sign of decent prep and even though there does seem to be primer under there nothing seems to have adhered to the previous paint. As you can see here, the paint is just peeling away in many places. Click image to enlarge That means I can't really trust it not to peel more so all of the last lot of paint really needs to come off. Not what I had hoped for. On the plus side, at lease I only have to to the front wings, rear tub and roof. Click image to enlarge |

Strip down has got a little out of hand now
Click image to enlarge but things are moving along nicely. New rear corner cappings as the old ones were a bit beyond saving. Drilled out all the rivets so I could sand behind them and fitted new ones. Had to sand off every scrap of the old paint, horrid job. The old roof panel had a few dents in it (and the paint was going to b tricky to remove) so I sourced a replacement. Click image to enlarge Stripped, sanded and tucked in the big tent ready for paint (Satin black) Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Second row doors, wings and such like are prepped and ready to paint. When I removed the second row doors the B posts were in slightly worse shape that I though. They have previously been repaired and badly. Neither them or the C posts were actually fixed to the cill rail, the weld had not penetrated and just came apart. I did contemplate a repair but bought new complete side frames instead. I was tempted to get galvanised ones but I think I will need the flexibility of adjusting the fit given what I have found with the other work on the car. I also bought some Puma second row seats to fit and the seat conversion kit from YRM. Click image to enlarge Getting that fitted and the side frames is the main job for this weekend. |

My apologies, I should have been more specific- have you painted with a spray gun or something else? 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Ah. Sorry.
Applied with a roller. Coach enamel as it comes and combicolor thinned a little. 4" foam gloss roller. I did experiment using the roller first and then laying off with a brush but I prefer the very slightly textured finish of the roller and it is uniform across the panels. |

Thank you.
That’s fantastic - I like the idea of a DIY paint job. I’d like to think of going a satin finish myself years down the line. Rather than spending £1,000’s in labour for a painter. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS. |

Turns out the galvanised bulkhead was originally not galv, repaired and then galvanised. Unfortunately the repairs were not universally excellent so it has rusted from the inside out near the front door hinge.
Click image to enlarge My welding skills are not up to the task of welding thin sheet steel to a galvanised bulkhead so I need to take it elsewhere for repair, but it need to be roadworthy before I can do that so a little delay before that it done and the bulkhead gets painted. I decided to lift the tub so I could get good access to both the crossmember and the rear of the tub for painting. Click image to enlarge The crossmember and tub are now painted and my focus has been on the panel work needed to fit the Puma second row seats. With pretty much everything off the car all my reference points had gone so it has been a little tricky. The chassis brackets for the mid crossmember were not central so the PO decided to fit it on one side with the correct bolts and on the other with three self taping bolts / speed screws. I had to cut and re-weld the mounts and then fit the new mid crossmember. Then on to cutting the rear wheel arches. Click image to enlarge Before lining everything up, dry-fitting, re-measuring and then fitting the new wheel arch fronts. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge and then the final fit up with both arches fitted (but still to be fully riveted in place) and the new upstand / seatbox. Click image to enlarge Next job is to fit the rear seat support chassis brackets. But as with everything else thus far, they don't really fit and some modification will be required. they sit a little too high and the mounting faces of the bracket do not line up with the chassis. Click image to enlarge In order to fit these I will need to either remove the tub to gain access to modify the brackets then drill the crossmember. Or remove all or part of the floor. Then I should be able to get it roadworthy enough to take it for welding and reassembly can begin. Thank goodness for that. |
