Reverse vibrations
So, yet again the gift that keeps giving is confusing me again.

So if I let the 110 roll backwards down a hill no vibrations

If I try to reverse up a hill I get a vibration like the handbrake or another thing is catching.

Noticed it first when reversing and turning but now looks to be any reverse up a hill. Reversing down (with power engaged) feels fine.

Was thinking handbrake drum but rolling back is fine (clutch dipped) so now thinking more it’s clutch.

Before I go an rip out clutch and find it’s not that, anybody else suffered the same symptoms?

I did try to film it underneath when it’s vibrating but all I see is gearbox/transfer case moving on its mount, could it be just the mounts? Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

It may be worth checking the position of your exhaust. After fitting mine it needed a slight adjustment as was rubbing when in reverse. WARNING.

It feels more than just the exhaust, it’s nochy and banging when reversing.

No lsd’s or lockers that I know of.

I do have a new transfer case to fit, as I have a leak on the center shaft and it was simper to get one that’s fixed (the re bushing) than try to remove mine and get it locally machined. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

Clutch does not know if you are moving forward or backwards.

I would remove a prop shaft at a time, test in diff lock, and see if it goes away. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Yep I could not work out why it could be clutch. But feeling was something when powered as when freewheeling it was not vibrating Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

It's not the clutch.

Check transmission mounts, torque on the box can move it to knock on something. Cheers

Will be checking mounts and props this weekend.

The whole car vibrates when reversing and clunks it’s not like a exhaust banging you can feel the car bumping around hence I thought handbrake but when not under power going reverse down a hill does not do it Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

It could be dirt in the handbrake drum causing imbalance or it may have been bashed if there is any signs of that?
The UJ’s can be a bit difficult to check without taking off one end, might just be a single bearing.

Do you have a go pro camera or anything like that? If so you might able to look for anything visual if there is any signs if you can mount or strap it somewhere.

Worth checking rear dampers and A frame too.

Good luck. Thumbs Up $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

I put my iPhone under the 110 and recorded, all I see is the transfer case/gearbox moving a lot when in reverse, going forward it was not moving around as much, hence my assumption it was in that area, but it could be props binding etc or even further down, so ill investigate that this weekend. Thanks for the reply and hints so far. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

That is this weekends task 😱.

Don’t use the 110 every day and time constraints means play time is only at weekends unless something catastrophically failed that needs immediate attention.

First thing I will try will be props off individually.

I assume both props connected vibration present
If I remove front or rear and vibration stops then issue is prop or diff connected to that prop. If both props off in turn (as both off at the same time won’t help me go anywhere 😂) keep the vibration then issue in gearbox / transfer case side

Well that’s my thinking. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

Make sure you keep the handbrake drum on if you take the rear prop off or you’ll have no hand brake. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

From your description I doubt id having both props off will give you any vibration/conclusion as it seems to happen only when there is a load (does not happen reversing down a hill). 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
