Help - Dead 90
I think I need your collective help please. I’m great with mechanical, but really dumb when it comes to electricery!!! It’s a 2016 90 we are talking about.

After a run of 90 miles each way last weekend, all was good. A thrash home on Sunday evening should have cleared out the dpf as well. Then parked up in my modern very tight garage. It has barely enough room to get the 90 in and me out.

I went to get it out this evening. Key in ignition and nothing. I mean absolutely nothing. No dash lights, no starter struggling with a low battery…. Zilch happening. I stuck my charger on the battery, one of those modern type chargers. Left it for three hours. Came back and it’s making a rapid clicking noise. I disconnected the charger, noise stopped. One red led below the rev, flashing. But still nothing at all when I tried the ignition again. I have no idea where the clicking came from as it’s too tight in the garage to get around the vehicle. It’s dark outside and downhill. So don’t want to get it out, as I won’t be able to get back in.

Help please, where do I start in the morning?

Alternator gone and Censored the battery?

Maybe disconnect and put on charge overnight and then see.

It's possible the clicking after charging was the stater motor solenoid. Just not enough current to turn it over.

Disconnect battery and charge overnight.
Try a different battery/jump start
Disconnect alternator output and start it.
Check current draw from charged battery to sm and alt. Cheers

Sounds like your battery is dead. Does your charger provide any info on the battery condition?

Thanks for the replies, I have disconnected the battery and am currently charging it. I will report back any progress.

If a discharged battery, it may have failed, thats fine I can deal with that. If its another cause that drained it then I'll be more stuck. But we will cross that bridge when we come to it.

Lets see how a charge works first.

Either your battery is knackered, or something was left on when you parked it up. Hopefully you just left something on, but it may still cost you a new battery

Well for now it all appears OK again. Ive charged it since this morning and 7 hours later it works. Other than the alarm going off when I reconnected the battery terminals, nothing else untoward. Starts OK. All dash lights as they should be.
I have to leave it tonight, so will have another look on Saturday evening when I get back and see what's occurring! Ill report back if anything else happens. Thanks all. D

Probably battery voltage too low, it’ll take over a day to charge depending on what charger is used.
Then needs re-syncing the key fob by pressing it rapidly multiple times.
Once the LED dash light slows down, then ensure its immobilised pressing unlock once, then you can start it after the glow plug lights gone out.

Also be sure the battery clamps are tight, and the ground lead in particular and its connections.

If that still doesn’t do it, then it maybe starter or a deceased battery.
You really need to keep an eye on what voltage the battery is, check it and take a look if you can. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

I have a cheap USB charger that goes in the cigarette lighter. It also shows voltage. 12.7~12.8V engine off that jumps to ~14V when engine is running. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Hi I had exactly the same, cost me a new battery and a load of fault finding, found nothing wrong and it fixed itself.

I have concluded that I probably left the side light or interior lights on as it has been AOK since (6 months) and the old battery is now a spare DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I have found that running the "recon" setting on my CTEK MX5 battery charger for 24-36 hours works wonders when I have inadvertently flattened a battery.

It has saved me money several times over the years.

Agree, certain things are consumables that need changing as soon as there is any indication of failure. Saves a lot of hassle and makes any troubleshooting so much easier.

Battery definitely on that list, so is radiator, starter, alternator, clutch, brakes, etc
