With the recent warm weather, I’ve been driving with the windows down. This has made me aware of a faint metallic squeak that coincides with slight application of accelerator, and again a couple of seconds after releasing the accelerator.
After engine switch off the turbos two actuators both exercise themselves a few times, but don’t seem to squeak. I have sprayed them with wd40 to see if it makes a difference but it didn’t. Are there any other valves on the exhaust system that could be making this noise? I thought it might be a loose heat shield, but can find anything loose. All seems secure down there. It is a very faint metallic squeak if you know what I mean. My fear is that it could be the vanes inside the turbo making the noise, which I don’t think would be anything I could easily fix. 🤔 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy 1968 S2a 88 aka Bob 2014 Jaaaag F Type 3.0 Supercharged. |

It's not the idler pulley is it? There was a recall out for it and mine would chirp especially when it was cold, had my idler and belt changed twice under the recall as the 1st one only lasted 6 months and then started chirping again. Cheers Ian

Found this thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic90614.html? but I'm sure there is one with the recall details on it but can't find that at the moment. Cheers Ian

No it’s had the recall for that. It’s definitely a squeak that occurs when the accelerator is pressed lightly. I’ll have a good look underneath when I get a chance. It does it at a standstill if the accelerator is blipped. Sounds very much like an exhaust valve that needs lubricating, opening and closing. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Are the turbos variable geometry type? If so, it might be the turbine housing vanes moving.

That sounds very much like what I’m looking for. Do you know where in the exhaust the valve is? I’ve checked the turbo vane actuators and linkages, and they are free and don’t squeak. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Sadly, it is an "maintenance free" part, and when I had the issue with my D5, it was replaced under warranty.
Here is a part of the exploded diagram of the rear half of the exhaust system on the D5... I have circled the part in red. I don't know if the D300 has the same system though... |

I have just checked on the exploded diagram for the diesel L663... It looks like you have the same part... But looks as though it can be replaced separately (unlike on the D5)

That’s fantastic information, thanks very much. The location seems to correlate with where I think the sound is coming from. I’ll have a look when I get a chance. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV
