Why doesn't the Defender coast?

When I take my foot off the accelerator, the car coasts for about a second and then there is noticeable slowing.

We have another automatic vehicle (a VW) and I compared. Coasing to 30mph from 40mph on a flat road in the VW takes about a minute. In the Defender it takes about 10 seconds.

And it makes cruise control quite jerky as it's unable to gently coast, so it's either gaining speed or noticeably reducing speed.

I’m thinking it might be something to do with recharging the mild hybrid battery system. 24MY D300 130 X-Dynamic HSE Santorini Black

My cruise control is very smooth (D250 MHEV diesel) l don't notice any coasting when l lift off the gas, it just slows down with what feels like mild engine braking.

My adaptive cruise control was far more jerky than my old range Rover, but that seems to have improved somewhat since I’ve been using it, I don’t know if maybe the system learns. 🤷‍♂️ 24MY D300 130 X-Dynamic HSE Santorini Black

Most of the vw stuff is dual clutch and conventional gearbox that is computer controlled and the next gear is selected ready for use. Rather than a torque converter and traditional automatic transmission.
The vw product also in some orientations have a coast function which effectively freewheels the car until either brake or throttle is applied.
I have two t6 transporters which have this feature, later t6.1s are not always fitted with the feature.
Not familiar with the current Defender, so have no experience of this.

Is your VW full time 4wd? I haven’t noticed any real difference between this defender and my puma, the transmission is more complex and has more friction than a 2wd, therefore naturally there is more of a breaking effect when coasting.

My P300 coasts pretty decently.

Now our Audi Q5 will coast for days! Not sure what they did with that one, but its pretty amazing how far it'll go once you lift.

The GLS450 is the one that just slows like the brakes are on for us.

I have a 4motion dsg and a 2wd dsg and the coast function is completely identical between them.
You can turn coasting off in one of the menus, but I actually like it and leave it alone.
