Snapped axle fix
Today I hit a pothole because some dick was on my side of the road. I got to work and the tiny weep that I thought was my eyeball seal failing was in fact the axle coming apart! Luckily the “fix” Land Rover implemented in their recall actually worked! This is a video of my “fix”!

Great that it stopped the wheel detachment in your case Thumbs Up However I would not call it a fix by LR as the axle should not have snapped at the wield in the first place and the LR catch brackets did not prevent this. I very much doubt a friction welded one would have snapped in those circumstances.
It does re raise the question that Blackwolf raised before , I.e would LR replace a faulty axle if it snapped due to the faulty weld even if the catch brackets were fitted as part of a recall. I think not, even if you had not changed a single bolt from factory spec. Evil or Very Mad

It’s a bit like Boeing saying the aeroplane doors will likely come of in flight, so we have provided parachutes for everyone to “fix” the problem!

Ps. Watching you rolling around under your defender reminds me of me, albeit you get up a lot quicker than I do Rolling with laughter

Good to hear that at least the catch brackets gave enough time to spot the failure before the wheel/hub parted the vehicle.

I think this is also the first reported failure with the catch brackets.

It was so interesting first bit of the video, where it shows the failure. What strikes me is the position of the crack relative to the weld bead, so possibly the failure is caused by an offset between the robotic welding arm and the axle positioning.

blackwolf, why would my welding be any worse than Land Rovers, I weld for a living so trust myself.

What could possibly go wrong that hasn’t happened already thanks to JLR? If it breaks again it’s the same scenario, the catch bracket will do it’s job again!🤣🤣

IMHO the surfaces should have been chamfered before welding. Puma 110" SW

I did watch the video (but not any of your others) and I am relieved to hear that you do weld for a living, a fact which is not obvious from the video but is actually quite reassuring.

No offence intended, but the apparent lack of weld prep, the absence of UV protection on your hands, the rather random striking of the arc, and the innovative use of what appears to be a socket extension did not radiate "professional". The overhead welding did however radiate "experience".

For a field repair I would rate it as first class however, and with the catch bracket refitted it will be as safe as it was before and safer than when it left the factory.
