Buying a Defender (approved used)

Hi all,

I am looking to buy a Defender 110X dynamic HSE. Keen to get a used one so grateful to hear about any particular issues I should be careful about (and diligence into) on the vehicle before I decide to buy.

Also keen to hear about the engine choices. I am thinking of buying a D300 but would like to hear from Defender experts whether there is any particular engine that I should look for in particular. Would have liked petrol but used stock on a 7 seat configuration and petrol engine is non-existent

Use will be mostly on-road driving with occasional offroad use only.

2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Zermatt Silver

If it’s any use to you. This is a P300 7 seater. Mileage is on the higher side. But it’s HSE spec and 7 seats. I’ve driven this one, it’s got everything you could want.

After 9 years in a diesel D4, I opted for the petrol P400 to get away from dpf, adblue, rising diesel prices, costly hp fuel pumps, overpriced injectors etc.

Very happy with the P400SE, towing our single axle van, fuel burn is actually similar to a friend's D5 with the ingenium D300 towing a similar van, so almost like for like in that department.

Interesting re the mileage. When I tried to part exchange my Defender 90 earlier this year, my dealer said that the mileage was too high for them to take into stock (it was a 21 reg with 41k miles).

On the engine question, have to say that I was very impressed with the D300. A diesel with plenty of torque feels so well suited to these cars.

D300 is a great engine, if you looking at used scrutinise the actual spec of the car very carefully. with the supply chain issues specs were very inconsistent things like the Digital Dash and clear sight are missing on some HSE spec cars. If you find one with the sunglasses holder its a bonus! 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

Yes, I really miss the sunglasses holder in my Defender. Never really understand why this feature was dropped from so many newer Land Rovers.

I missed out on the sunglass holder, but Simon from powerful UK does a decent retrofit kit

How does the retrofit kit work? Does it go where the official LR one goes?

I now have a Range Rover, but wondering if a similar retrofit is available as there appears to be a blanked out place for the sunglasses holder.

Yes, it's basically the oem sunglass holders for the Range Rover, however the kit needs a little cog and a retainer. It's on my list, just haven't gotten around to it. Fits directly into the panel that holds the blanked off shiny plate.

Bizarrely l've never used the sunglasses holder in mine, l should l guess put my sunglasses in it
