wading plug in bell housing
Hi all I have been trying to find out about the location of the wading plug on the td5 bell housing.

I have obviously looked under the car and can see a large threaded hole on the centre of the bell housing at its lowest point.

It is about the same size as the oil fill hole on the transfer box. Is this the bell housing wading plug?

I had ordered a set of wading plugs that are much smaller than this hole? I can only assume that they may be from an older defender Tdi? Does anybody know the part number the larger one if that is what I need?

Any ideas appreciated

I'm willing to be corrected, but I thought the Td5 didn't need wading plugs (or already had them fitted, or something)?

Im pretty sure that they are not needed on the engine due to chain etc but I think they are required on the bell housing?

Right this may help Ive taken a photo of what I have tried to describe. In a nutshell is this the wading plug hole?

From what I have read online they are fitted at the factory but has mine been removed at sometime and not replaced?

I have a plug in that hole.

I believe this is the wading plug, but as you I would like to have it confirmed.

Most TD5 leave this plug in permanently, but I think it should be taken out to drain occasionally.

I haven't removed mine yet as I was never completely sure it was the right plug.

Yes this is the plug/hole, and as stevie d said it does need taking out every now and then or leaving out when not off roading to let any fluids come out that may get collected over time.

Thanks for that, I have not had the car that long and assume that it has been removed in the past and not replaced?

Going to do some potentially deep water this weekend and so want to get it plugged just in case.

Im am aware from what I have read that as you say normally the plug stays in apart from a check when the car is serviced.

I personaly and do do it the other way, I leave it out unless im going to get it in deep water, this way it will fully drain and never collect fluids or condensation and possibily contaminate the clutch over along period.

Ive seen many a clutch fail early due to contamination from water and or oil from the crank oil seal failing.

My 110 did the Dakar as a support/chase car from start to finish without one in at all and nothing went wrong Smile

I would still like to get one just to pop in if I do have to cross deep water.

I picked mine up from the local main dealer (for Tdi though, not Td5 but possibly the same plug). As an aside, does the Td5 only have one drain hole rather than two on the Tdi?

Yes only one drain hole as the TD5 has a chain up front and not the rubber band of the TDI

If you get stuck I think the part number is RTC4335, but if you visit any local nut and bolt shop its a standard thread type of which i forget the size, poss M14x2 pitch. just get any bolt and cut the thread down to 15mm and put a copper or fiber washer on it.

This is a good and very pratical short notice fix.
