Well that was a big disappointment. Got my grease and my piston type grease gun and expected to pump fresh grease in the props and see it ooze out showing it’s freshly packed.
But only 1 out the 4 seems to take the grease. How do the nipples work? Seems there is a small ball in the middle? Is it sprung? Does the grease pressure over ride this and let grease in? Is it possible my nipples are blocked/stuck? Any suggestions appreciated. Balls deep in this maintenance now and can’t be doing with non greased props! |

I cannot get my grease gun to fit properly on the prop grease nipples so I remove them to grease.
Yes, the grease nipple has a ball (non return valve). The grease gun is able to build enough pressure to push the ball and grease in. The ball should return out to keep the grease in. This is a common problem and usually indicates that your nipples have been neglected and the grease in the uj has dried out and gone hard. Unfortunately this also means it is no longer lubricating. There are impact greasers available which sometimes can blast the blockage out but generally they don't work well on ujs due to the multiple grease paths. If you are really lucky unscrewing the nipple and cleaning both it and as much of the congealed grease from the uj spider as you can may do the trick, sometimes injecting oil rather than grease can do the trick (regrease afterwards, of course). More commonly with a really bunged up uj the only option is to remove the uj from the propshaft, dismantle it completely (caps off, rollers out), clean and grease everything then reassemble. If you're adept at whipping ujs out this only takes about an hour per prop including removing and refitting the propshaft. If you're not, allow a day and make sure you have a couple of spare ujs just in case. |

Thanks for the replies. Think my first port of call is going to be to see if I can push the little ball in…. Then see how easy it is to remove the nipple. Then start planning prop removal which I’m not keen on.
Path of least resistance first I think. |

Prop removal isn’t bad to do, I’ve done it when it was so cold my spanner froze to the prop.

Nobody has mentioned wearing suitable head protection like cyclist or cavers. I have lost count of how many times I have hit my head on various bits of Land Rover paraphenalia while working underneath it. Fair enough it does not damage the Land Rover but it does keep my stock of expletives in use 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

There is a good reason for not wearing a hard hat or similar - generally the Defender is harder than your head, so suffers no damage if you whack your bonce on it. Damage to said bonce generally heals with time, sometime leaving minor scars to add that look of rugged wild-eyed mystery that Defender owners tend to have.
If you wear a hard hard there is a good change that the noggin will be fine but the vehicle will suffer. That means expensive repairs. Next time you hit your thumb with a hammer, be happy that your thumb has saved damaging something that isn't self-healing! |

I found this video helpful for greasing mine.
I bought a set of longer grease nipples as advised, just in case, but didn't need them. Something like this, which can be temporarily swapped out for greasing only. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/233642984589 I had 5 grease points on my propshafts 4 on the UJs and my front propshaft has a grease nipple but the rear one doesn't. How much grease do you pump into the prop shafts? Ie does it come out anywhere? Th UJs I can see it coming out of ...but not the prop
