Hi,
Hoping someone can help me. Was going to change the gearbox oil and I noticed my gearbox fill plug hex centre has been rounded off - I've managed to slacken it off and I now plan to swap it out when I change the oil. I thought the part No was LR005008 so ordered one up but looks to be a smaller diameter than the current fill plug although it does have the same 8mm hex centre. Maybe the fill and drain plugs aren't the same and I ordered up a drain plug(?) (For obvious reasons I can't remove the drain plug to check  )
Anyone know if the fill/drain plugs are the same as each other and what the respective part numbers are. Thanks for looking  Cheers,

hi piechipsandpeas - thanks for the reply - where would that be in relation to the fill plug? - I can feel another plug higher and more forward of the fill plug but that has a larger than 8mm centre in it.

I have seen on a Transit manual that the fill plug is further aft than that stated on the Defender manual. IIRC the Transit manual was saying fill to spill.
Form your description, it looks that your damaged plug is the one described in the Transit manual. IIRC, when I changed the oil, both fill and drain were the same. Still does not solve your problem. Hi 24heuer Yes I was thinking of the one further forward (mine both use an 8mm allen head) but I've just removed them to check and they are slightly different thread sizes. Sorry. |

The only contendoers I can see on LRCAT are:
LR005009 - COVER - OPENING PLUG - TACHOGRAPH HOLE LR005008 - PLUG OIL FILLER PLUG PLUG - OIL DRAIN It may be that you have removed the former, it is different to the latter which is (apparently) common to both drain and filler. There are also the following plugs etc on the casing, but I doubt that it is one of these you've take out: LR005002 - PLUG - BLANKING 20MM - There are two of these and they don't have hex socket heads, they look more like core plugs LR004966 - PIVOT [ - (V)7A999999 ] - These are the selector fork pivots, if you've taken one of these out you are in the soup. LR008204 - PIVOT [ (V)8A000001 - ] LR016958 - RETAINER - INTERLOCK SPRING - Not quite sure about this, but if you've taken it out a spring will have followed. Note that all the above is based on LRCAT, unfortunately both my spare MT82s are in my unit and not immediately accessible to look at. |

Not sure if the drain and filler are different threads as I didn't remove the drain plug (the one underneath the gearbox). Photo shows the 2 I removed on the side of the box. The one towards the front of the vehicle (the black coloured one) is not the fill plug but is often mistaken for it.  Click image to enlarge |

The fill and drain plugs are part number LR005008. I’m not sure about the “not the fill plug”.
See part 7 in diagram. https://www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-r...case_45025 Note . I replaced my fill and drain plugs with magnetic ones that have a Hex head. Obviously the fill plug is above the oil level, so the magnet makes no difference.
