Oil cooler assembly

As there is a slight weep from the plastic filter housing, I decided to swap to the later housing which takes the screw and screw off metal filters.

I have a genuine second hand FoMoCo one and decided to replace the seals in it before fitting. Having split the cooler from the filter housing, there are two gaskets inside it.

My question is would you place the new gaskets in dry or possibly smear in some gasket sealer or even a thin oil coating?

If the surfaces are clean and unmarked then the gasket alone should suffice..
I don't suppose there was any sign of gasket/sealer been used when you removed it.. So as long as it clean up OK.. Should be fine..

That’s what I was thinking but just needed a second opinion as otherwise I could be tempted with my usual approach of a film of blue hylomar as a belt and braces, although likely not correct Very Happy 2010 2.4 TDCI Puma Defender 90

im not sure about the not correct.... its a judgement call based on experiences..
ill bore you with my last wrong call..
the dreaded crankshaft rear oil seal which I fitted exactly as instructions stated and used sealant sparingly on the areas recommend...my instinct was to use a bit rtv on it as a belt and braces as you say, but I didn't.. and it leaked Big Cry
on the second attempt I just followed my instinct as well as the instructions and used rtv silicone sparingly where I thought necessary and I suppose with a little benefit of hind site, knowing where it had leaked from ...
its fine now Very Happy , so its not straight fwd... Thumbs Up
