With correctly working fuel pump, it gives 3l per minute
So when you disconnect fuel line, is is more like shower, not like tiny little flow. Not fully working fuel pump is not able to purge the fuel system. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo |

Yeah it went through the purge alright, but I think I’ll just bite the bullet and go for pump now, even though the mV through the fuse looked good

Could have a restriction in the tank, blocking the pump sucking is the other possibility?
Don’t waste your time with aftermarket pumps, you will be back doing it again- VDO only. |

Did you locate your fuel pump relay and properly check it for signs of scorching etc? I know you said you had 3 relays, but not sure if you pulled the fuel pump and looked at the pins, socket and wires?
I had very similar power issues a couple of years ago and had the fuel pump replaced and it didn't make the slightest difference and was an expensive thing to try. My relay was scorched so I bought a new one and fitted a new socket on some freshly bared wire and it hasn't caused me any problems since. It's a cheap and quick thing to try if you've not done it already. yeah if you have a pal who is willing to give you a hand, Id drop it. It didn't really take me and my dad do mine, We had it dropped with in an hour and half if anything. We had a right laugh getting the replacement stuff to settle though, Once we cracked that and emptied the tank, We were on our way with in a matter of 2 hours all in. A bit of time and that's it, well tbh i think me and my dad have tackled for worse jobs on a rover metro Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

id just replace the relay and check the wiring for the sake of what it cost for a replacement relay, only like a tenner. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

pulled all 3 and they looked fine... Going to sort the pump - I sourced a non-VDO model to try with first, if it sorts problem, I'll go source a VDO pump. |

Well... success!!
Looks like it was the fuel pump... old one looks pretty nasty with gunk on the bottom. So will probably go source a VDO model now. It's quiet smokey now though... even after taking it for a short spin and bringing it back to idle, it's a lot more smokey than it ever was... white smoke. Click image to enlarge |

I would clean that off ( you can disassemble them) and the tank out and I bet it lives again. I really would buy the good pump, I won’t even fit the aftermarket and places won’t even sell them, lucky if you get 6 months out of it. |

i bet its not running on 5 cylinders either, with it smoking like that. Mine certainly wasn't. Id put money on this been the original unit that was in, Mine was very clean, it was a cheap unit installed, i did find a receipt for it, and it looked like the specialist hadn't spent the proper conkers, and nor did the owner really. Swopped it over with a VDO unit and we were back in business. Me and my dad were over the moon to hear it fire up. i wouldn't be surprised if you could rebuild one with better parts, back in the metro days, a couple of the lads used to upgrade the SPI pump, to a cosworth Fuel pump, and all they did was change the pump unit in the fuel pump, to a stronger PSI unit, to make the car MPI, so it would run the 1.8 16v and VVC units. Just quick follow up to say thanks to all for the advice and tips - running well now the last week - it doesn't do much mileage really, but running smooth as a Defender can right now anyway
Haven't sourced a proper VDO pump yet, but I will, and keep this one I put in as a spare. Now on with the other list of jobs for it... brake discs, pads, etc etc - the never ending list! Should be ready for a 2 week trip in France later on this year |

Quick update - I still have an issue, which I suspect is going to be a little harder to diagnose... been out on two separate trips recently with exactly the same issue and how it occurs
starts fine, driving well to destination, maybe 20miles - stop at destination for maybe 30mins - starts perfect, drive maybe 2 miles and lose drive completely, won't restart. Do a fuel pump purge (5 x accelerator pedal) and it will start after that with a good amount of white smoke and drives home absolutely fine. My guess is air getting into the system somewhere? |
