Landrover service came out after a cold start again this morning and pulling away and losing power.
This time once they plugged in found:

1.P0089-7A Fuel pressure regulator performance
2.P1169 Fuel Rail in range
3.P0088-07 Fuel Rail Pressure to high

Off to my dealership again to pick up another whoopee cushion on wheels......Disco for them to resolve the issue.
The guy stated they had been made aware recently about the tank breather pipe having to be placed behind panels as water was getting into many Puma tanks, also a possible problem where water was getting in through the key hole on the filler cap.

Me thinks it is all Censored .......... Whistle
Its a fuel rail delivery problem in my submission, because as I pulled away on cold start, great for 100 yards, took my foot off the accelerator and the revs overran as I breaked and foot off the pedal, then the box of spanners started and threw up the EM light again......grrrrrrrrrrr
More installments when I get to the bottom of it all!!

The breather pipe issue was resolved early 08 by repositioning the pipe behind the tail light cover in the wheel arch 2.4 90 XS

Why does that not surprise me?? They are clutching at straws, lets see what the dealer finds, as I know the Landrover Assist guy was talking to the workshop manager about recall sheet numbers for 2008/2009.

New fuel rail and EGR valve which apparently failed and was going to open circuit each time and then letting in too much fuel causing the light to illuminate as an engine management problem.
I'll reserve my judgement on that. They say all the new software was loaded in 2008, so will be interested to see what she does now. Rolling Eyes

Hello...new to this forum...but just started having cold start problems with my puma defender...changed the MAF sensor with no improvement and after reading all of the above I'm now thinking EGR valve ?? symptoms ...rough on cold start chucking out alot of blue smoke presumed un burnt fuel which dissapears when warm and run likes a dream apart from a slight 'hunting' when coming to a halt after disengaging the clutch...does the symptons sound familiar...no MIL lights on (as yet) but thinking the fuel economy has dropped....only done 16k from new as used as a winter vehicle only.....just wondered if your vehicle is still behaving itself afetr having the fuel rail and EGR replaced ??
Look forward to your response

If it is the EGR valve then this is easy to check. First do you get the 5x chukka chukkas on shutdown? If you do unplug the EGR valve as you know the valve is closed by hearing the self clean cycle of chukkas. If the same symptoms are still present then you can dismiss the EGR as the fault. Blue smoke is more indicative of oil burn and unburnt fuel is more of a black, sooty exhaust smoke. Does it smell as if it is burning oil?

Yes, once disconnected the EGR won't work at all. You will get the MIL illuminated and it will log a couple of tested DTC's P1402 and P1409. Also the defender may enter limp mode, if it does just switch off and restart and this will cancel the limp mode.

Thanks Brian,
Just disconnected the EGR connector as image supplied, thank you, and hunting dissapeared and back to being as smooth as silk( well as smooth as defender gets) on road test, won't be able to test the cold start/ rough idle until I leave work tonight and will report back....that would suggest a faulty EGR ?? and if so do I replace or fit one of those blanking plates, which would you reccomend ?? sorry forgot to mention no MIL lights have come on either .....

Thank you

Peter

It is very strange that you are not getting a MIL light with the EGR disconnected as it is part of the Euro emmissions control for that engine and as such, a tested DTC should log and the MIL illuminates. As you have no MIL illuminated and if it is out of warranty, I would just leave it disconnected. If the Puma is still under warranty you could do a warranty claim and get the EGR replaced and also get them to find out why the MIL did not come on. When you first switch on the ignition does the MIL light up?
The other option is to get a remap with the EGR closed function. I have an Alive remap with this option and it works very well. The only thing I do do is that every month or so I put the original fuel file back on for a day to stop the EGR being sooted closed because it is unused. Though I don't think that is an issue as I use 2SO in my fuel, but it does no harm to let the EGR run as it should every now and again.
The blanking option does work as well by limiting the exhaust gases but does not stop them altogether as the EGR is still working as it should. I have the bits needed to completely blank and remove the EGR valve altogether but will not do this until I am out of warranty. The EMS side of the EGR is taken care of by the Alive tune so there will be no MIL or DTC's logged.

I read somewhere that the MIL lights will not be thrown on until the fault code is recorded 3 times, so it may appear on the next couple of start ups...the MIL light does come on with ignition and goes out when started, so no issues there....I have no way of testing faults logged...it is a 2007 Puma so is out of warranty....to summarise I guess I am getting close to the offending component and will be interesting on a cold start....from what I am reading there does not appear to be a downside of fitting a blanking plate, but understand the plates have variable hole diameters dependant upon the revision of software installed and this is where I am at the extremities of my technical understanding.

Thank you

Peter

I've now received brain indigestion....thank you for this, I will digest over a number of hours....reading some of the posts above your last code breakers, my understanding is that it may be possible that if I plug the EGR back in again it may have cleared the issue and will run as usual?? would that seem possible....
