Classic Tractors
New subject to me but know some on here will be far more knowledgeable. I’ve always wanted to have a classic tractor. With the kids starting to move out and on, I can indulge in my nutty fantasies more…

So, as a starter for 10, I know very little bar the various makes. What is sought after and collectible ? Do they have parts issues like my Series 1? Rough budget for a good runner etc? Any help or advice welcomed. 1951 80" S1 2.0

I think you'll find the topic is as diverse as classic cars.

So what do you consider to be a "classic" for starters? Best part of 100 years history to choose from.

As for parts, yes, no, maybe... Will all depend on what make/model/spec you go for and what sort of part you are after.

Likewise prices are going to range from cheap and affordable to very expensive.

£3k should get you into a Massey 35 runner but the prices have jumped quite a bit since I looked for restored ones. Up to £6-7k now for a shinier one.
I'm off to polish mine now!

Parts are all readily available and pretty cheap.

Must be a Land Rover thing, I’ve always fancied an old Tractor, God knows what I would do with it or where I would store it. A small holding would be ideal but in reality that isn’t going to happen so I’ll just have to keep on dreaming.

Wow. Looks ace

What do you want to use it for? Do you have any land to make use of a tractor?

Will you want to take it to shows, if so, how will you get it there? Old tractors can be pretty hard core to drive, very bumpy, loud and slow with very heavy steering and clutch pedals. This can all be good too, but if you plan to drive it any distance on the road, you might want a cab or similar and if going to use it to do any work, power steering can make a huge difference.

Tractors come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and configurations.

I have two that sadly I'm going to have to sell soon! A 135 with front loader that is a great runner and useful, but cosmetically needs some TLC, and a TED20 that looks beautiful but I'm struggling to get it running well!! Let me know if you'd be interesting in buying both!!

Here is the Grey Fergie, she's lovely - ?si=JVaf7SehePGMLanw

And the 135 (I have new wings but haven't painted them yet) :

It's all about what you intend to do with it. Take it to shows (you need a deep pocket to buy something pristine or the skills and will to renovate one); take it on tractor drives (doesn't have to been polished and pretty but needs to be mechanically reliable; vintage ploughing matches (doesn't have to look pretty but you also need a plough and a trailer or truck to transport it); use as a working tractor or simply just drive it on the road.

Unfortunately prices are still heading north. You could also consider joining the National Vintage Tractor and Engine Club and going along to one of their local meets.
